Editorproof your writing - by Don McNair - Goddess Fish Book Tour

HOW TO EDITOR-PROOF YOUR WRITING
By
Don McNair

BLURB:

Most editing manuals are like geography books. They give great information, but don’t show how to get from place to place.  Editor-Proof Your Writing: 21 Steps to the Clear Prose Publishers and Agents Crave is a GPS that leads you through the writing jungle to solve your specific writing problems.
Most editing manuals are like dictionaries from which you’re asked to select words to write the Great American Novel. This book shows what words to use and what words NOT to use.
Most editing manuals are loaded with mind-numbing theory.  This one presents knowledge a step at a time and asks you to apply what you learned—a step at a time—to your manuscript’s first chapter.  Along the way you’ll also edit a nine-chapter melodrama and check your editing against the author’s.  When you finish, you’ll have an editor-proofed first chapter and will be ready to edit the rest of your book.
This system was proven to work in three years of weekend and online classes, titled Editor-Proof That Chapter and Twenty-One Steps to Fog-Free Writing. They are parts One and Two of this book. Part Three discusses finding and working with critique partners, professional editors, publishers, and agents.  The students loved the concept!
This book is perfect for use in classrooms. The information is presented in bite-sized lessons which can be assigned daily. See what students say about their classroom experiences on the back page.

Excerpt 1

Unpublished writer “Barbara Stevens” asked me to critique and edit her newest unpublished novel’s first chapter.  “I’ve written twelve other manuscripts,” she said, “and they’ve been rejected a lot of times.  I hope you can figure out what’s wrong.”

Well, I did figure it out, and quickly.  This lady was basically a good writer.  Her blogs sparkled, she dreamed up creative plots, and her heart was certainly in her work.   But she’d made a major craft mistake in that chapter and, presumably, in all twelve of those manuscripts.  It was a mistake that almost guaranteed she’d never be published.

We discussed her problem (we’ll get back to that later), and the light bulb over her head glowed brilliantly.  She rewrote that first chapter and I edited it again, and, as if by magic, it became publishable.  Barbara used her new-found knowledge to revise the rest of that manuscript, followed by her twelve other novels.  Within two months she sold one, and she’s now been published many times.  She’s on her way.

The point?  Barbara’s breakthrough came directly from correcting that one craft mistake.  She’d made it time and time again and was destined to repeat it again and again, until someone told her what it was.

You may be making that same mistake.  Or perhaps you’re making another equally deadly one—mistakes we’ll identify and resolve in this book—and are not aware of it.  But there’s hope.

BLURB:

An enchanting time-travel romance for fans of Jude Deveraux and Diana Gabaldon.

Hadley Easton has a family legacy to uphold as a Time-Keeper. He guides people forward -or back- who feel they were born into the wrong time.

Samantha turns his world upside down when she arrives through the front door of the London bookstore. No one arrives through the front doo: it’s the time portal.  On top of that, she informs him she’s from the year 2012, over a hundred years in the future.

When Hadley learns the truth, he realizes his time is running out...

EXCERPT

Hadley Easton took the watch from his pocket and flipped it open to check the time. He wasn’t sure why— the hands never moved. Time seemed to flow everywhere except inside the portal where the bookstore stood. Here, time felt suspended.
*****
Hadley stood with his back against the wall and stared at the floor. His boots felt nailed down. He wanted to run after the woman. Stop her. Ask her those million questions starting with, how could it be 2012? He couldn’t force his legs to move.

He slid his fingers along the chain and tugged the watch from his pocket again. He popped open the silver case. Once more the hands of the watch were frozen, as they were since he arrived at the bookstore. But now, it was a quarter to one. Time moved ahead ten minutes. The ten minutes he assumed he’d spoken with Samantha. How did that happen? How could it happen? Had he imagined the hands moved? Hadley tapped the glass face with the tip of his fingers.

He gathered his strength and made his way down the stairs to the front of the bookstore. She was gone.

Across The Winds Of Time - Bess McBride Book Tour

I'm thrilled to welcome Bess McBride, author of ACROSS THE WINDS OF TIME as my guest!
Bess will be giving away a $25 Amazon gift card to one random commenter during her tour, so don't forget to leave a comment!

BLURB:

While on a genealogical research journey through the Midwest, Molly Hamilton impulsively buys a 100-year-old Victorian house in the middle of a cornfield, and falls in love with the house’s owner...the original owner, that is. Can he be a ghost? The handsome, intriguing attorney certainly feels solid—and somehow her soul knows she has always loved him.

Darius Ferguson has no idea how he has come to present-day Iowa. The last thing he knew, the year was 1880, and he had just buried his fiancée, who happens to look exactly like Molly. He cannot separate the two women in his heart—to him, they are one.

In spite of being drawn to him, Molly thinks Darius is unhinged. Darius wonders if he has joined his fiancée in purgatory. If time travel is possible, will love be enough to build a future together?

EXCERPT

“Molly, wait!”

I froze in place for a moment.  It was definitely a man under the tree though I couldn’t see his face...and he knew my name.

 “Do I know you?” I called in an unsteady voice.  It seemed, though, as if my words were taken by the wind.  Who was this man?  And how did he know my name?

He moved away from the tree with a tentative step.  His clothing was formal—a dark suit and white shirt—as if he had just been to a funeral.  I hadn’t remembered seeing a canopy for a funeral on the grounds, but I wasn’t about to take my eyes off the stranger for one instant to confirm that suspicion.

I thought I saw a flash of white teeth from under his dark mustache, but he was still some distance away.  Golden highlights in his chestnut hair caught the sunlight, and my mouth dropped open.  He was undoubtedly one of the most handsome men I had ever seen in my life.  My stomach rolled over at the sight of him, though not with admiration of his good looks.  Cold sweat broke out on my forehead, and I put my hand to my mouth as if to hold back the morning’s breakfast...if I’d had any.

For here—in the flesh—was the man of my dreams.  Not just any dreams.  More specifically, my dreams of the previous evening.  Yet I couldn’t for the life of me remember ever seeing him before until this moment.

“Be careful what you wish for,” I muttered behind the hand that covered my face.

 “Molly, don’t be afraid.  I can see that you are.  I don’t want to frighten you.”  He took another step forward and held his hands up palms out...as if to show me he wasn’t armed, I thought hysterically, or to calm me down.  Either way, it wasn’t working.

AUTHOR Bio:
 Bess McBride made her first serious writing attempt when she was 14. She shut herself up in her bedroom one summer while obsessively working on a time travel/pirate novel set in the beloved Caribbean of her youth, but she wasn't able to hammer it out on a manual typewriter (oh yeah, she's that old) before it was time to go back to school. The draft of that novel has long since disappeared, but the story is still simmering within, and she will finish the adventure one day soon. Bess was born in Aruba to American parents and lived in Venezuela until her family returned to the United States when she was 12. She couldn't fight the global travel bug within and joined the U.S. Air Force at 18 to "see the world." After 21 wonderful and fulfilling years traveling the world and gaining one beautiful daughter, she pursued her dream of finally getting a college education. With a license in mental health therapy, she worked with veterans and continues to work on behalf of veterans. She writes romantic suspense, contemporary, light paranormal/fantasy and time travel romances and currently has eight novels published. The Sundered - Guest Post Ruthanne Reid

I'm so pleased to be one of the hosts for Ruthanne on her blog tour.  I asked her a couple of questions about her characters, and this was her reply:

Hello! Thanks so much for having me here! You asked me how my characters come to me, and whether they're imaginary or based on real people. I think this is one of those questions that can land a person in plenty of hot water, but I'll try to answer without incriminating myself!
I believe there's no such thing as a character in a vacuum. Everyone we meet becomes part of our emotional tapestry, lending us patterns and colors we can recognize in other people, creating the foundation of empathy. Our grasp is affected by family, friends, co-workers and classmates, even people we see on TV and feel we understand.
I never set out to make characters in a real person's template, but I often see the influence. My romances took patterns from my romantic husband. My traumatized characters took influence from my loss, and the way people I know handle loss. My characters' flaws are always based on bits and pieces I've seen in real people, though usually combined to make something new.
To me, a character who doesn't have the layers, motivations, fears, and intricacies of "real" people feel fake. Even if I don't agree with a character's choices, I have to be able to emotionally understand them.
Harry Iskinder is definitely not me, and yet we share similarities. We've both been through terrible betrayal and deeply hopeless times, and we've both clung to hope that others felt wasn't real. I drew heavily on many of my darker times to make him, but he's very a different person. His particular bitterness, his harsh exterior, and his deep fear of being alone don't belong to me – but they do to people I have known.
I can see bits of everyone I've known in every character I write. It makes me love them, whether or not they're good, bad, or seriously confused, because loving people (whether or not they love you back) lets you see for who they are. It's an honor. It's fun. And it makes stories worth reading.them

Thanks so much Ruthanne, I too see bits of myself in most of my characters too, and it does helpt to 'get under their skin', doesn't it.

I hope your tour is a great success and that you sell many copies of 'The Sundered', it sounds like a fantastic read.

Harry Iskinder knows the rules.

Don’t touch the water, or it will pull you under. Conserve food, because there’s no arable land. Use Sundered slaves gently, or they die too quickly to be worthwhile.

With extinction on the horizon and a world lost to deadly flood, Harry searches for a cure: the Hope of Humanity, the mysterious artifact that gave humans control over the Sundered centuries ago. According to legend, the Hope can fix the planet.

But the Hope holds more secrets than Harry knows. Powerful Sundered Ones willingly bow to him just to get near it. Ambitious enemies pursue him, sure that the Hope is a weapon. Friends turn their backs, afraid Harry will choose wrong.

And Harry has a choice to make. The time for sharing the Earth is done. Either the Sundered survive and humanity ends, or humanity lives for a while, but the Sundered are wiped out.

He never wanted this choice. He still has to make it. In his broken, flooded world, Hope comes with a price.

EXCERPT

Parnum puts his hand on my shoulder. "We'll be at Shangri-la in a couple of weeks. By that time, we'll have a plan."

A couple of weeks of this? Of having to think about things because there's nothing else to do? Screw that idea, doctor. "Yeah."

Parnum pats my shoulder and stands, heading off to talk to the captain, who smiles when he sees him coming. Everybody likes Parnum.

I look at Aakesh.

His hair moves a little in the breeze. "It will be done."

He knows what I want. We're speeding up. "Thank you."

Demos walks by, slowly. His arm's in a cast — he must've broken it somehow last night. I don't know if he overheard us or not.

I don't know if it matters.

I can't do this alone.

I try to picture paddling alone in the north of the world, no one to share with, no one to hear. Alone.

It's a nightmare.

Aakesh looks at me side-long, his irises no longer glowing, and it's my turn to know his unspoken request: freedom.

I can't, Aakesh. I can't.

I don't even know when I decided he can hear my thoughts. I just know he can. Why not? It's no crazier than anything else that's happened.

I can't, Aakesh.

He nods and turns his face away.

I guess that conversation's over.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Ruthanne Reid was raised in the woods, but fortunately, her isolation was offset by regular visits to New York City. She pursued music for years before realizing she wanted to tell stories rather than sing them.

Ruthanne writes in and around Seattle, owns dust-covered degrees in music and religion, and is generally considered dangerous around household electronics. Her favorite authors tend to be dramatic (J. R. R. Tolkien, Neil Gaiman, Patrick Rothfuss), but she doesn’t see this as a bad thing. She belongs to a husband, a housemate, and a cat, respectively.

The Sundered is her first novel.

RETURN OF THE LEGACY - Guest post and Giveawaywith K H LeMOYNE

I'm delighted to welcome K H LeMoyne to my blog today!

Good day to everyone and thank you to Romance That’s ‘Out Of This World’ for having me.

I’m here to share a bit about my world building process for Return of the Legacy and the Portals of Destiny series. A brief background on the story should help kick off the process.

Centuries ago, magical beings on Earth opened portals in time and space to flee persecution. One magical bloodline sealed the portals to protect the new worlds and shield Earth from magic returning. That bloodline, now almost extinguished, consists of the portal sentinel descendents, the Makir. Targeted for assignation by an evil mage in the world of Tir Thar, the current Makir are unaware of the gift they carry. Two magical families are key to ensuring the mage won’t break through the portals, claim all powers as his own, and enslave those who survive.

The concept for one of the families came from a pack of tarot cards that I own. The images on the cards don’t directly relate to magic but four cards struck my interest and wouldn’t let go. Those four cards created an image in my mind for the main character, Briallen, her three brothers, and the beginning of their existence in one of the magical worlds, Tir Thar.

 Having the series premise and an image of Briallen, I considered her skills, her personality, and how she views herself. Then I developed a counterpart who would be strong enough to partner with her but not overpower her as she grew beyond her preconceived views. Enter, Logan Mackenzie, a man now the head of his small family and driven to find a murder who is targeting his lineage on present day Earth.

While this is only book one, but I spent a great deal of time working out details for the series: the magical beings, their social structure, the magical rules that govern both Logan and his three cousins as well as Briallen’s family, a list of the kingdoms in Tir Thar as well as those in the world of Loci. Lists and charts file my Portals file. I also outlined a brief history of what happened after the world of Tir Thar was established, and more details on Brennagmore, the kingdom from which Briallen’s family originated. Then I expanded the scenario for why the mage pursues them. What evolved was a grimoire of sorts detailing lineage, kingdoms, powers, and people. Even small vignettes evolved for bits of the backstory to highlight the de-evolution of magic in Brennagmore.

And because magical beings fled Earth to create new worlds, I drew maps so I could keep track of how I wanted to represent the different kingdoms. My original maps didn’t make it into Return of the Legacy. However two maps will appear in a spin-off tale of the portals due out in April, Dragon Rider’s Gift. The dragon riders make a brief appearance in Return of the Legacy and they have their own battle against Brennagmore’s mage. I plan a map for the second book in the portals series, as it will continue in the same world of Loci as book one.

Because magic fled from Earth, the new worlds bear a loose similarity to the geography and history left behind. In some worlds this is radically different. In others, the twists of time parallel Earth’s history at points. Names and titles may or may not conform to real life. The Scottish Isle of Mull in Return of the Legacy exists, though not quite as depicted in the story. The Laird MacKinnon as well as Margaret, the Maid of Norway, are also part of Scottish history with some liberties taken for their existence in the dimension of Loci. Duart Castle, Glengorm Castle (unlike Glengoram in the story), Staffa and Fingal’s Cave, and the Balliscate standing stones are available for view at their own sites on the Internet or on my website. They inspire a magic all their own.

This sounds like a lot of work and it was but, for me, it was worthwhile. Once completed, these scenarios, the people, their lives, and the worlds all have substance and texture to add to the stories. Then the real work began. If only all those lists and documents could just fold themselves into a story. In spite of all that work, only small segments were woven into Return of the Legacy. Granted, the details make the world very clear in my mind and since the series arc is already fixed in a five book series, many of the details and research will be added in later books. So very little is wasted.

At this point in my career, I write only fantasy and paranormal stories. For me, the key is to make scenes and actions vivid. To make magic stand apart from the reader’s expectation it needs sensory details of sight, smell, touch, and emotional response that are unique and diverge from the magic rules readers might expect. Those factors are added to world building files as well.

For each book I write I create a Details Sheet. This is basically a one-page list of all the characters by name, significant items like age, hair and eye color, powers, setting names and key items. This is a subset of the large research file I have on the worlds behind the portals. Drafting the story typically adds even more details as the flow of text stimulates additional creativity. The Details Sheet allows me to keep track of everything. I also have this cheat sheet to pull out when I start subsequent books.

The thing that is missing here is the building of the romance, which I handle in a different process of scene mapping for the book. The Portals of Destiny series adventure has a beginning and conclusion, but Briallen and Logan were chosen specifically for Return of the Legacy because of their unique composition of personality, history, and potential. No other in this cast of the series would do for book one. Fortunately, for all the planning in the world, there is one factor neither the evil mage of Brennagmore nor I can control…and that is the power of love. A different form of magic!
 ~Kate KH LeMoyne

Thank you so much Kate, that was fascinating. and what a great observation about the power of love being a different form of magic! Now let's find out a bit more about your book.

Return of the Legacy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Three magical dimensions…Two mystical bloodlines…One undeniable destiny.
Born a magical empath, Logan MacKenzie has spent his life protecting his family from discovery. Evil has found them anyway. What begins as Logan’s search for answers on Earth becomes a race for survival in the magical dimension of Loci.
The battle to save those he cares about will reveal his true lineage—the bloodline of the Makir, one half of a pair of sentinels chosen to guard the mystical portals between dimensions. The price of his acceptance: a love he never imagined possible and a heartbreaking choice.
Her family attacked, her home destroyed, and now stranded on Loci, Briallen of Tir Thar, descendant of a magical race, has only to summon the power within her to return to her own dimension—or so she had hoped. Unfortunately, her powers aren’t cooperating, and the sorcerer bent on her family’s destruction will stop at nothing to possess her.
Raised without knowledge of the portals, the Makir guardians, or her own destiny, Bri takes a leap of faith in an alliance with Logan. Embracing an uncertain power and accepting his goals as hers offers her the only way home. If they fail, the consequences of allowing the portals to fall to evil are unthinkable—the destruction of every magical dimension throughout space.
Warning: This is a fantasy romance, containing magic, love, and courage. The omission of vampires and shapeshifters is intentional.
EXCERPT:
“Something’s coming.” Logan’s arm halted Bri. One hand gripped her wrist as he reached over his shoulder for the pommel of his sword. “Ever felt the drop in air pressure right before the lash of a huge storm?”
The stillness extended beyond the deadness of the air. The birds were silent. No rustling issued from the underbrush.
She glanced forward and back.
“In front.” His sword slid free without a sound. The blade reflected the moonlight’s silver.
For a second, she thought the edge of his weapon wavered, a blue rim of light from tip to guard. He shifted and it disappeared.
A loud thunderclap reverberated around them. She expected a burnt tree or roiling clouds. Instead, three figures, cloaked head to toe in black, erupted from a fiery hole of red—a heinous fissure in the night air.
The minions spread out and circled them, pinning them to a small stretch of the clearing.
“We can’t outrun them.” Bri twisted and removed her knife, eying the minion at their back. “Stay clear of their hands. Their bones and claws are infectious.”
“The weapons look deadly.”
“They are.”
The minion before her withdrew a moon-shaped sickle. The one she could see from the corner of her eye brandished a thin glowing rapier. The rapier moved closer to Logan. A brief slash stirred chills of cold past her face.
Back to back with Logan she turned, gauging which minion would strike the first blow.
