Blind Alliegiance, - interview and VBT Book Tour

BLIND ALLEGIANCE

HL:  Welcome to the Flightdeck Violletta, make yourself comfortable and let's start the interview.
How about you tell us a little more about yourself , with three things not many people know
about you.

VR: I’m addicted to Pepperidge Farm Goldfish crackers (cheddar cheese and pizza flavors)

I’m a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles football fan

In the 1990s I raced motorcycles (I really loved doing this!)

HL:   Wow, fascinating! What do you do for fun when not writing?

VR: I’m a voracious reader—reading just about anything I  can get my hands on. I live in Alaska, so I’m outside fishing or four-wheeling whenever I can.

HL:   When did you start writing?

VR: I started writing short stories (illustrated by my best friend) when I was five years old. I sold these little treasures in my neighborhood for about 25 cents each.

HL:   LOL,  Nothing like starting young! So what comes first: the plot or the characters?

VR:  My brain doesn’t work that way (I wish it did). I just sit down and write. A character might pop into my head first or the story unfolds as it will. Overall, I’m an undisciplined writer.

HL:   Tell us about your latest release and what you think readers will enjoy about it.

VR: Blind Allegiance is my debut novel and Book 1 of a new series.

Eleventh century Norway faced many challenges, including religious turmoil between the pagans and growing Christian community. It was an age of struggle and discovery and I believe my characters display the courage and faith it takes to survive under harsh conditions. Above all, it demonstrates how two people (Randvior and Noelle) grow to respect each other’s cultural and religious differences and eventually fall in love.

HL:   Sounds like a wonderful read! Tell me, If someone were to play one of your characters in a movie, which character and

VR:My hero, Randvior Sigurdsson, is a classic Viking. He’s incredibly tall and tanned, with blond hair, and totally ripped. I’d love Timothy Oliphant to play him, but he’d need to wear high heels and gain 50 pounds of muscle to match the body type! Hugh Jackman fits the profile nicely. Hope he doesn’t mind dying his hair.

HL:   Great choices! What have you learned about writing since you were published that surprised                              you the most?

VR: Hurry up and wait! Publishers and editors aren’t on your time schedule.

HL:   So true! What’s you’re writing process? Has it changed since writing your first book?

VR: This reverts back to the undisciplined thing. I don’t really have a process. My favorite writing spot is at the end of my dining room table facing the four windows that overlook the mountains and woods behind my house. If natural splendor can be seen as a writing process, I guess that would be the most consistent factor. I like seeing nature when I look up.

Nothing has changed after writing my first book.

HL:  Do you listen to music when you write and if so, what kind of music – or do you  find it distracts you?

VR: It’s a 50/50 split for me. Music never distracts me when I write, if anything, it helps me find my rhythm. I’m a heavy rock kind of girl (from classic to new). I love everything from Pink Floyd to Disturbed. But I also enjoy classical, country, and R&B.

HL:  What is your personal definition of success?

VR: My definition of success as a writer is the same as the definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. If you don’t keep doing the same thing (edits, queries, synopsis, and submissions) and don’t expect different results, you’ll never get published.

HL:  So true! Now, who is your most favorite character of all time from any book?

VR: One of my favorite books is Kepler’s Witch (James A. Connor). Mr. Connor describes my favorite     character, Johannes Kepler, as the Protestant Galileo and a neglected hero of science and faith. Known for his laws of planetary motion and as the founder of modern optics, Kepler defended his professional research and maintained his faith through war, religious conflicts, and personal tragedies. He’s an academic warrior and definitely a hero worth reading about.

Thank you so much,  Violletta, it's been so interesting finding out more about you. Now let's find out some more about your book!

BLURB:
It’s a risk of a lifetime loving a man you’re supposed to hate…

Betrayed by a brother she hardly trusted before the bloodthirsty Viking, Jarl Randvior Sigurdsson, attacks her home, Noelle Sinclair is conveniently bartered as a means to save her cowardly sibling’s skin. Forced to leave her homeland and accompany the petulant Viking to the untamed wilderness of central Norway, Noelle is ever-aware of the burgeoning dangers around her—including her weakening resolve to resist Randvior.

Should Noelle surrender to his resplendent charms and seduction, or fight with every ounce of strength she possesses to get home?

EXCERPT:

Dark clouds always gathered in Noelle Sinclair’s dreams. Hundreds of nightmares had played out in her mind since childhood. Why should tonight be any different?

The smell of burning wood invaded her sleep. Smoke snatched her breath and she tried to purge her lungs by taking deep breaths. She ran for the great hall and all she could see were scorched rafters and floorboards. Guards scrambled to the battlements, while women and children fled the castle. She searched for her sisters among the people migrating outside ...

“Fire!”

Noelle’s eyes snapped open at the sound of dire warning. By God, this was no dream! She flung blankets aside and rolled over, shook her older sister awake, and jumped out of bed.

“What’s wrong?” Margaret asked sleepily.

“The castle’s on fire. Get up, now!”

Margaret scurried from bed and ran with Noelle to the windows overlooking the eastern edge of the castle. Through the swirling fog, Noelle could make out a tangle of men with torches and weapons in the courtyard below. She further scanned the shoreline where the North Sea pounded against the rocks and dunes. The castle was under siege and poorly defended. Most of the soldiers and her father were in Ireland, leaving only her brother and a skeleton army behind.

Her gaze still locked on the beach, Noelle caught sight of three, silvery-white longships anchored beyond the walls. Their blood-red sails snapped in the wind. She stared in horror as the pattern on the sails came into focus—the shape of a dragon.

A World Apart By David Brown - Book Blast and Giveaway

A World Apart
By
David Brown

BLURB:

Demetrius makes his first mistake when he lets his best friend Halcyon marry Eleyna, the love of his life, without saying a word. On the day of the wedding, he walks away from the Elencheran town of Dove's Meadow and joins the army.

He makes his second mistake when the pirate Black Iris tricks him into letting dozens of men, women and children die in a fire. Demetrius is imprisoned in grief and disgrace.

But he can atone. The Black Iris is dead. The Ivory Rose has risen to the top of the pirates and is leading brutal raids on the coast. If Demetrius can capture and kill her, he'll win his pardon.

And then Demetrius discovers the Ivory Rose is Eleyna. He must decide which will be his third mistake: losing his last chance at a pardon or destroying the one woman he's ever loved.

EXCERPT:

From Chapter 25: The Edge of the World (29631)
Pockets of swirling magic dust rose from the surface of the pink and violet water as it came into contact with the white beam that formed the perimeter of all Elenchera. The beam was not a perfect circle around the world, or a straight line, but led a jagged and uneven course, creating four distinct edges from four heavily defined promontories.

The west edge of Elenchera had been known to the earliest settlers in Gremilda – the magic dust that rose from the surrounding ocean gave the Gremildans the silver streaks in their hair and their glistening blue eyes – but one had to stand right by the edge to be truly close to magic.

A small island of rock overlooked the west edge, its surface blemished only by the presence of eight beautifully carved statues that stood on the outskirts of the island. Each one depicted a Gremildan of great distinction. The oldest was of a pioneer named Victor who had led the first successful crossing of the Raintops Mountains, opening the route into West Gremilda in the Second Shard. The most recent was of Moravia, a brilliant naval commander who had kept the island safe from invasion in the Ninth Shard.

The island by the west edge had long been considered sacred ground to the Gremildans. Only the Protectors and scientists were ever permitted to make the short crossing across the ocean to step foot on the island. The code had been broken by successful rebellions in the past but none more desecrating than the arrival of the Eligantian colonists. Many of the colonists had made the journey to the island but despite relentless pressure and persecution they had failed to yield the secrets of how to cast magic.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:
David Brown could be considered a fantasy fanatic, especially since he has spent the last 10 years developing a 47,000-year history for his fictional world of Elenchera. When converting his obsession into literary form, David commits himself to a rigorous writing and editing process before his work can meet his approval. Combined with the critical eye of his wife and a BA Hons in History and English, David's dedication leads him to his goal of inspiring readers through heartfelt stories and characters.

Although David is inspired primarily by fantasy fiction, he also finds his muse in the form of anime, world cinema, history, and biographies. His own books, Fezariu's Epiphany and A World Apart, and the in-progress Ansel's Remorse and The Stars Beneath the Parapets combine aspects from worlds both old and new into compelling tales of a world not soon forgotten. David himself certainly does not lack a spirit of adventure; in fact, he left his job in 2007 in order to spend a month travelling. Second only to meeting and marrying his wife, David counts this as one of the most amazing experiences of his life.

Across The Winds Of Time - Bess McBride Book Tour

I'm thrilled to welcome Bess McBride, author of ACROSS THE WINDS OF TIME as my guest!
Bess will be giving away a $25 Amazon gift card to one random commenter during her tour, so don't forget to leave a comment!

BLURB:

While on a genealogical research journey through the Midwest, Molly Hamilton impulsively buys a 100-year-old Victorian house in the middle of a cornfield, and falls in love with the house’s owner...the original owner, that is. Can he be a ghost? The handsome, intriguing attorney certainly feels solid—and somehow her soul knows she has always loved him.

Darius Ferguson has no idea how he has come to present-day Iowa. The last thing he knew, the year was 1880, and he had just buried his fiancée, who happens to look exactly like Molly. He cannot separate the two women in his heart—to him, they are one.

In spite of being drawn to him, Molly thinks Darius is unhinged. Darius wonders if he has joined his fiancée in purgatory. If time travel is possible, will love be enough to build a future together?

EXCERPT

“Molly, wait!”

I froze in place for a moment.  It was definitely a man under the tree though I couldn’t see his face...and he knew my name.

“Do I know you?” I called in an unsteady voice.  It seemed, though, as if my words were taken by the wind.  Who was this man?  And how did he know my name?

He moved away from the tree with a tentative step.  His clothing was formal—a dark suit and white shirt—as if he had just been to a funeral.  I hadn’t remembered seeing a canopy for a funeral on the grounds, but I wasn’t about to take my eyes off the stranger for one instant to confirm that suspicion.

I thought I saw a flash of white teeth from under his dark mustache, but he was still some distance away.  Golden highlights in his chestnut hair caught the sunlight, and my mouth dropped open.  He was undoubtedly one of the most handsome men I had ever seen in my life.  My stomach rolled over at the sight of him, though not with admiration of his good looks.  Cold sweat broke out on my forehead, and I put my hand to my mouth as if to hold back the morning’s breakfast...if I’d had any.

For here—in the flesh—was the man of my dreams.  Not just any dreams.  More specifically, my dreams of the previous evening.  Yet I couldn’t for the life of me remember ever seeing him before until this moment.

“Be careful what you wish for,” I muttered behind the hand that covered my face.

“Molly, don’t be afraid.  I can see that you are.  I don’t want to frighten you.”  He took another step forward and held his hands up palms out...as if to show me he wasn’t armed, I thought hysterically, or to calm me down.  Either way, it wasn’t working.

AUTHOR Bio:
Bess McBride made her first serious writing attempt when she was 14. She shut herself up in her bedroom one summer while obsessively working on a time travel/pirate novel set in the beloved Caribbean of her youth, but she wasn't able to hammer it out on a manual typewriter (oh yeah, she's that old) before it was time to go back to school. The draft of that novel has long since disappeared, but the story is still simmering within, and she will finish the adventure one day soon. Bess was born in Aruba to American parents and lived in Venezuela until her family returned to the United States when she was 12. She couldn't fight the global travel bug within and joined the U.S. Air Force at 18 to "see the world." After 21 wonderful and fulfilling years traveling the world and gaining one beautiful daughter, she pursued her dream of finally getting a college education. With a license in mental health therapy, she worked with veterans and continues to work on behalf of veterans. She writes romantic suspense, contemporary, light paranormal/fantasy and time travel romances and currently has eight novels published. Touched By Death Book Barrage

I'm pleased to be one of the participating Blogs hosting the Book Barrange for Dale Mayer's brilliant new novel, 'Touched by Death.'

Blurb:
Death had touched anthropologist Jade Hansen in Haiti once before, costing her an unborn child and perhaps her very sanity. A year later, determined to face her own issues, she returns to Haiti with a mortuary team to recover the bodies of an American family from a mass grave.

Visiting his brother after the quake, independent contractor Dane Carter puts his life on hold to help the sleepy town of Jacmel rebuild. But he finds it hard to like his brother's pregnant wife or her family. He wants to go home, until he meets Jade - and realizes what's missing in his own life.

When the mortuary team begins work, it's as if malevolence has been released from the earth. Instead of laying her ghosts to rest, Jade finds herself confronting death and terror again. And the man who unexpectedly awakens her heart - is right in the middle of it all.

Excerpt:
The women headed to the Iron Market and the few shops open along the way. The elegant mansions and townhomes spoke of days gone by. Once glorious in their regal bearing and bright colors, these buildings had taken a major knock from Mother Nature. Still, even with the damage from the earthquake, Jacmel was a tourist destination like no other. At least here, there were obvious revitalization attempts happening to get the city back on its feet.

The afternoon zipped by at a rapid pace – full of shopping, laughter and fun as the women ran from shop to shop and stall to stall buying a few items to make their job a little brighter and more comfortable. Jade was delighted to find several brightly colored t-shirts and cotton pants in a beige-khaki color. They would withstand a lot of wear and tear. At one brightly festooned stall, she found several hair clips big enough to hold her heavy blond hair off her neck.

If she'd had a little longer to prepare and pack, she'd have gotten a haircut. As it was, the clips would do for now. She could always get it cut here if she couldn't stand the heat. Meg's short curls looked perfect. And Susan's fine black bob that stopped at her chin also looked comfortable.

"Now that has to feel better." Meg patted Jade's hair clip. "Nice. Now I almost wish I had long hair myself. Almost." She grinned and picked up several clips. "I bet my sister would love a couple."

"Later, when it's time to go home. Too much to pack this early."

"You're right." Meg put it back with a sigh. "Too bad though."

As they headed back to the SUV Susan stopped at another brightly colored stall, one festooned with odd-looking handmade dolls. An old short and squat women – wearing so many necklaces, they almost obliterated the sight of her red blouse underneath – worked at the booth. The woman's black gaze latched onto Jade and never let go.

Jade moved to the other side of Susan in an effort to get away from that piercing stare. And came too close to the weird-looking straw and cloth dolls. She noticed the papier-mâché looking ones painted in black with weird markings…and many other items she couldn't begin to recognize. "What are these things?"

"Vodou paraphernalia."

Jade shuddered and took several steps back. "Not for me, thanks."

Susan shook her head vigorously. "No. You don't get it. This stuff is for good luck. Used to ward off bad spirits."

With a second shudder, Jade moved several steps back, shaking her hands in front of her. "I still don't want one."

Susan grinned and reached to pluck her choice off the top of the stall. "Well I do. Just what we need for the grave work."

The transaction was done in silence. The old woman accepting the money never took her eyes off Jade. Unsettled, Jade did everything to avoid her. She wished Susan would hurry.

Finally they were done. Jade turned to leave when the old women moved off her stool so quickly, Jade never would have believed it possible if she hadn't seen it herself. Before Jade could back away the old woman grabbed her by the arm.

"Danger stalks you. You see it but you don't understand it. Careful. Or you will join those that have gone before." She dropped Jade's arm and returned to her stool beside her cart.

Jade froze. So shocked and horrified by the crone's touch, she hardly understood what the old woman said.

Meg grabbed her arm. "Come on," she hissed. "Forget about her. Let's get back to the SUV."

Susan snagged her other arm so the three walked back linked together.

"That was too weird," Meg said. "I'm glad you got a doll, Susan. Good luck is just what we need."

Posted reviews from satisfied readers!
This book had so many twists and turns and I can honestly say that the ending truly surprised me! I was not expecting it to end the way it did so kudos to Ms. Mayer for keeping the suspense up until the ending. There are mentions of voodoo in the story but because this is Haiti, how can there not be? However, these do not take over the story and the evil in this story is purely human. This was a great mystery entwined with a good love story and just enjoyable all the way around. (Kmoaton)

Another well written, suspenseful book that's come to be expected, by Dale Mayer. Her characters come alive and the story literally jumps off the pages. A mix of devastation from the earthquake in Haiti to painting a picture of the beauty that was untouched by it with a smattering of Haitian spiritual beliefs thrown in. Highly recommend. (Janet Fedor)

Dale Mayer has done it again. She's written an amazing, page-turning book that's unlike any other book I've read. I can't imagine any other author setting a book in Haiti after a devastating earthquake - and pulling it off so brilliantly. I cared about Jade and Dane. They felt like real people in trouble. I admired them and wanted them to be safe and happy.

I'm good at guessing endings, but this book kept me in suspense up to the end. I already want to read Mayer's next book! (E.S. Rose)

Up A Dry Creek - Avery Flynn's Virtual Book tour with cbls promotions and 'giveaway'

I'm so pleased to welcome Avery Flynn to my blog today, as part of her CBLS Blog Tour.  You can read about her book 'Up A Dry Creek' at the end of this post, but first she has a fascinating article to share with you about the 'three ps'.  Intrigued?  Then read on:

Triple P
By Avery Flynn
Plotting. Planning. Procrastinating. Those are the three Ps of the Avery Flynn writing method. What, you expected brilliance? Ha. Ha. Ha. I wish. Instead it’s a lot of work and my biggest hurdle is usually myself.

Plotting
Many of my writer friends are pantsers. They sit down at the keyboard and the words flow from their fingers like sunshine in the tropics. I hate them. Ok, I’m kidding but, man, there are days when I’d trade my thesaurus for that ability. But I’m a control freak, type A Virgo. I need a plan. So before I start a story, I put together a rough outline of the major plot points. I get about two thirds of the way through before I get so excited about the characters and the story that I can’t wait any longer and I have to start. So I write and write and write until I get stuck.

Planning
This is when I berate myself for not finishing the stupid outline. This step usually involves a brutal hot yoga class or an adult beverage and a bath. Depending on the severity of the corner I’ve put myself in, it may involve both options. Each one makes me stop thinking about the story, empty my brain and relax. It’s then that the ideas start to come to me. It seems to work the same way as finding your car keys - once you stop looking that’s when they turn up, on the key hook by the door where you always keep them. Not that that’s ever happened to me.

Procrastinating
For me, this is happens during the last chapter of the book. Each sentence takes ages to write. I’m fall into a kind of pre-mourning for the characters. Even though at this point, I’m writing the happily ever after at this point, I don’t want to say goodbye. I’m selfish that way, but I can’t seem to help myself. To make the characters fall in love with each other, laugh with each other and hate each other, I have to feel those same emotions. This creates a bond with the characters and writing the words ‘the end’ means severing that bond, so I procrastinate as long as possible before typing those fateful words.
Despite the three Ps, or perhaps because of them, the characters who lived in my head escape onto paper. So when you read about Claire and Jake in Up a Dry Creek, you’ll know a little more about how they got there and understand why I wasn’t ready to let them go when it was time to type ‘the end’.

Thanks, Avery, I can certainly relate to much of what you say, especially 'procrastinating because you don't want to say goodbye to the characters', LOL!

Now let's find out about a little about 'Dry Creek'

The Dry Creek series

Claire Layton expects the usual busy Saturday night at Harvest Bistro to be killer on her stilletto shod feet. She never imagines there’d be an actual murderer on the loose at her restaurant in rural Dry Creek, Nebraska. But when she discovers a customer dead in a dumpster, the killer demands she find the victim’s phone and flash drive or face fatal consequenses.

Jake Warrick, a cocky and mind-numbingly hot private investigator, becomes Claire’s unlikely ally in the search. Jake just wants to solve the case and get out of this hick town, but the diminutive and curvaceous Claire turns his plan upside down as they uncover a more complex crime than they ever imagined. The two bicker and banter like Tracy and Hepburn caught in a whirlwind of intense sexual attraction as they try to find the killer before it’s too late.
