Interview with David Russell - author of Self's Blossom

I'm very pleased to welcome a male  writer to my blog today (we don't have too many of those visiting this blog, so you're especially welcome, David.

OK, make yourself comfortable, adjust the artificial gravity and temperature to your own personal liking, get the Nanobots to fetch you your favourite beverage, and let's get started.  First of all, curious minds want to know - What do you do for fun when not writing?

DR: Music; I am a singer-songwriter

HL: Cool! And when did you start writing?

DR: In my early 20s

HL: You've been writing a little while then.  Tell me, what comes first: the plot or the characters?

DR: Definitely the characters

HL:  Oh, I'm so with you there. Now, if someone were to play one of your characters in a movie, which character and what actor would it be and why?

DR: Kate Winslet would probably make a good Selene; I love that nonchalant curl of the lip

HL:  Good choice. Have you a favourite actor/actress?

DR: There are so many. But Kareena Kapoor, the Queen of Bollywood, is pretty good.

HL:   Another good choice. What have you learned about writing since you were published that surprised you the most?

DR: That I could elicit response from unexpected areas

HL:  Oh I can certainly relate to that! What’s you’re writing process? Has it changed since writing your first book?

DR: I try to sustain mechanical continuity to keep the process lubricated.

HL: LOL, I think my nano-bots can relate to that one! :)  Do you listen to music when you write and if so, what kind of music – or do you find it distracts you?

DR: It definitely distracts me

HL:  Do you have a support system? Do you have a writing community? What valuable lessons have you learned from them?

DR: I have an online writing community, with some of whom I exchanged reviews

HL:  I think we all need support from our fellow writers, don't we. What is your personal definition of success?

DR: Feedback from intelligent, sensitive readers.

HL:   Oh, absolutely.  Can't argue with that one!  (Do have a piece of cake, the replicator produced them especially for my special guests.) What is your favourite source of inspiration?

DR: Works of other writers, films, photos

HL:   I love doing research, and I imagine most other authors do too. What sort of research do you do for your books and what’s your favourite source of information.

DR: Some historical; Google and Yahoo are the best sources

HL:  Oh, Google is so useful isn't it Many authors relate their characters to people they know.  Is this the case with    your characters and do you see yourself in any of them?

DR: Yes; my characters are fictional composites, containing elements of people I know. Yes; they also  contain aspects of my character

HL: Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

DR: Selene herself, because I would have loved an encounter with her.

HL:  Who is your most favorite character of all time from any book?

DE: Anais Nin talking about herself.

HL: Oh dear, the onboard computer's telling me our time is nearly up. Where can readers connect with   you?

DR: www.britishromancefiction.blogspot.com

HL:  Oh yes, I know it well, although I don't have time to contribute as much as I would like - I did have my fantasy novella 'Dancing With Fate' featured there in October though.  Right, before the shuttle comes to take you back to Earth, is there a question you really, really wish someone would ask, but they never do? If so what would be your reply?

DR :It would be nice if someone I really liked ever asked me if I had a romantic fantasy about her.

HL: Oh I love that answer!Thank you so much for taking time to visit my blog, it’s been a thrill having you here and learning more about you and your writing. I wish you much success now and in the future.  Now let's find out a little more about 'Self's Blossom'

Self's Blossom by David Russell This is about a young woman's self-discovery. Selene is a 'success story', having become a top journalist, while retaining her dazzling looks. However, in the past she has had unhappy relationships, and feels she has missed out on hedonistic fun.  This she obtains, firstly with a young stranger on a beach, and finally with enigmatic Hudson: tryst is preceded by cultural tourism, and careful sizing up of minds. Afterwards Selene returns to her 'I stand on my own' attitude.

While she is on holiday, her mind is free to ramble, often into Selene's chequered past. Flashback blurs into the present, past-rooted interior monologue into direct observation. The dialogue is sparse. Selene is a cautious, premeditative type, in whom thought, reflection and analysis outweigh direct action.
Selene’s subtle, monitoring mind coolly observes and controls all the events. Maybe she is super-confident, or perhaps has a deep, underlying insecurity. She is many things to many readers.

Extract from Self’s Blossom (Warning, 'Adult' themes)

Six-thirty p.m. in the lounge - the prearranged rendezvous time if things had been normal. Selene was first to arrive. Would Hudson now feel inclined to turn up? Would he be in any state to turn up? She noticed on her way that his key had not been returned to reception. In fact, he arrived at seven, looking incredibly coy, bashful and apologetic - just like Selene felt. He was carrying a gold lacquered gift box. She gave him a nod and a smile, beckoning him to sit down beside her. They kissed tentatively - reticently.

"Oh Selene, I really am sorry I got carried away like that. It was dreadful of me."

Selene patted him on the knee. "Darling, I should be apologising for getting all hysterical like that."

He put the box in front of her. "I went diving, wanted to come to my end in the depths; felt I couldn't live with myself, but I was obviously called to find something. I guess I realised one of my ambitions." He opened the box. In it was an oyster containing a huge pearl. Selene gave him a hug, tearful in her appreciation of his courage. "I've had to reflect an awful lot on my past experiences, you know. I've had to study feminism, and I really feel that if both sides - both sexes open up more, accepting more of each other, then life will be so full and enriching. I know that an awful lot happened between us . . ." he hesitated. "And?" A dreamy glow came over Hudson. "We've got so close, taken plunges together; you were so magnetic in that costume." A lump came to his throat.

Selene was now aquiver with suspense. They were at the point of that final something for which she had yearned so desperately for so long. Selene took the words out of his mouth. " Let's make everything perfect - the absolute right time, the absolute right place, and in the perfect way. Let's take the bridal suite together for our last night here!" The final overt proposition synchronised absolutely with Selene's memory tensions. A split second before her utterance, she had a vision of being at a ceremonial hair shearing before becoming a nun, and then of a mythical white wedding (the reality of which had never come near her). She thought of the flying buttresses of a cathedral, stained glass tinted in the morning sun, angled to the light of daring love, lifting to heaven. Hudson had at last uttered the key word to the elusive combination of the ideal seduction! This just had to have one fragment of impulse and spontaneity in the context of everything else being utterly premeditated. The peak of experience had been rehearsed to the finest detail. True seduction was total theatre. To hell with all those 'ideals' of 'naturalness'! She had seen through them in that turgid forest. The true ideal lay in laced artifice! Here was the final trigger. Ages ago, they had talked away all thought of marriage and domesticity. But Hudson's superb artistry in taking hold of the last remnant of conventionality for the final act of defiance against it. The flouting, the inversion of all the oppressive concomitants of a straight wedding night, was genius. They went into a torrid clinch nearly upsetting one of the tables in the process. "Oh darling," said Selene in a half-whisper, "you've done everything right; let's go!"

* * * *
The suite was, of course, available, and the deposit no problem for Hudson. The labyrinth of corridors in the hotel did not slow them down. Having located the apartment, they rushed back to their separate rooms for their belongings. Selene was the quickest to pack, but had a little delay with the lift. They arrived at the suite door simultaneously. What a scene of luxury for the denouement. Selene now took firm control. "OK Hudson, you go and take a bath while I get ready, and get fully dressed again when you've finished. I've got some special things in store for you!" Now all of Selene's fantasies came flooding in to her. Tonight she was the greatest actress, singer, ballerina, priestess-demagogue. She would dazzle the universe in the visual sphere, and then go on to the realm of touch. Her mastery of the lovely art of dressing and undressing would now be shown to the full.
In a flash, her clothes were off. As she fitted her cap, she got a tingling premonition of what was to come. When one had meditated on the art of love as deeply as she had, one knew that the extra precautions, far from detracting from the experience, could enhance it, by stretching the partner's anticipation. The outfit to replace her casuals was all in order in her expanding suitcase. First, her brief white satin underwear, then a pale blue body stocking, easy to confuse in the half light with a bathing costume, over it her diaphanous slip, then three petticoats - crisp, archaic, Latin and lusciously provocative, sheer white stockings, and then the purple ball gown in all its splendour. She stepped into a pair of white, lacquered high-heels. A touch of eye shadow and lipstick completed a breathtaking work of art. Hudson had seen her in her other gown, in a bikini, and a variety of outer garments. Now he would know all the stages in between, and then beyond, as she would of him. The bath water lapped mutely in the background. "Ready now, darling."

Amazing Love - an interview with K Dawn Byrd

I'm thrilled to welcome multi published writer K Dawn Byrd to my blog today.

K Dawn Byrd is an author of inspirational novels in several genres, including, historical, suspense, romance, and young adult. Some of her favorite things are chocolate, cars, and her pets. Her hobbies include reading, writing, and riding down country roads in the passenger seat of her husband's Corvette Stingray. When asked why she writes, her response is, "For the simple joy of placing words on the page!"

HL  Great to have you here.  Put your feet up and get your favourite drink from the replicator. Tell us a little more about yourself, with three things not many people know about you.

K  a)      I have a masters degree in professional counseling from Liberty University.

     b) I'm an animal lover. I own two hairless Chinese Crested dogs, an African Gray parrot, three ferrets, and several aquariums in my home.

     c)      I love sour foods. I'd rather have olives, pickles, or dilly beans than something sweet sometimes.

HL   Oh, another animal lover!  We love animals here. So what do you do for fun when not writing?

K When not writing, I love to read. Romantic suspense or young adult novels are favorites.

HL Tell us about your latest release and what you think readers will enjoy about it.

My latest release, Amazing Love, is the modern story of Hosea and Gomer. It was a tough story to write because my heroine suffers severe consequences for her sins, but it was necessary to portray how low we can go and how much God still loves us through it all. I hope readers will take away the fact that no matter what we do, God loves us with an unconditional love and is ready to accept us back into His loving arms.

HL   That sounds like a wonderful read, with a gret message. What’s you’re writing process? Has it changed since writing your first boo

K My writing process is frantic. I write all my books in 30 day marathons. In order to do this, I must start with a strong plot. Upon completion, I put the book away for a few weeks and then edit

HL: Gosh. I've only ever written a novel in thirty days for NaNo!  Do you listen to music when you write and if so, what kind of music – or do you find it  distracts you?

K   I must have total peace and quiet when I write. I hate it because it keeps me from writing sometimes when I'd like to.

HL:  What is your personal definition of success?

K  My personal definition of success has nothing to do with money. To me, a successful person is one who is happy and enjoys life.

HL  Great answer. Money doesn't always equal happiness does it! OK, next question. If you were an animal, which one do you think you would be, and why?

K  I'm not sure which animal I would be, but my step-daughter was recently joking and said that if she believed in reincarnation,  she'd want to come back as one of my ferrets because I take such good care of them. That was the ultimate compliment!

HL: I've never kept a ferret.  A friend where I keep my horses has a couple though, they're rescues and I'd never realised what fun creatures ferrets can be.  Well, sadly it seems that our time allocation is nearly over.  Before we have to say goodbye, where can readers connect with you?

Excerpt from my prologue:

Dee signed the letter with a flourish and then read it aloud.

Maggie:

For the longest time, I blamed myself. There must be something terribly wrong with me, something so bad that even a mother couldn't love me. After years of therapy, I've learned that it's not me, it's you, Maggie. You're not capable of loving anyone. That's a terrible thing to say about a mother, but it's true.

Even here at Carpe Diem, I've continued therapy via technology. Today was a hard day because it's my birthday. As was expected, I never heard from you. Like my therapist said, it's not my fault you didn't call. It's a choice you made, Maggie, like so many other bad choices.

I used to dwell often on the things you allowed to happen to me. You had to have known that John was visiting my room almost nightly. You chose to ignore it even though he was your husband. And then, he sold me to his wealthy friends and you stood back and allowed it to happen. Whoever had the most money. That wasn't the life I would have chosen if given a choice. Even now, I long for a life of normalcy. A husband, a couple of children, and a picket fence is just a dream.

There are times I hate you, but I realize you have demons of your own. Something has happened to you to cause you to be so selfish and full of anger. That's why I try to overlook your hostility and lack of love toward me. You need a good therapist.

My therapist recommends that I write letters to you when I'm angry. It helps. This is letter 642. I've kept them all. You'll probably never read them, but they're not really for you. They're for me.

Your daughter, Dee

You Know You're a Survivor if...

I'm so happy and honoured to have  a very courageous and talented writer on my blog today - who also just happens to be a friend and sister hostess of The Author Roast and Toast as well. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mac is going to talk about her own experience.  Okay, Mac, over to you!
******
Breast cancer is an experience I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, so if you or your loved ones have escaped this horrendous disease, all I can say is YEAH! But if you are a woman or know any women, chances are your lives will be touched by BC in the future and early detection makes all the difference in the scope of the battle.

So do yourself a favor, check those Ta-Tas every month. Avoid having to say, I know I’m a breast cancer survivor because I…

… no longer consider my breasts as boobs, but more like Tupperware bowls.
… have driven across town with my new “boobs” in the passenger seat.
… pink ribbons make me a little nauseous, even as I applaud the cause.
… have six different breast cancer charm bracelets.
… have a wig in my closet, I never want to see again.
… no longer wear a bra. It’s not necessary, which is a good thing, since I can’t find one to fit anyway.
… have had more than one person rub at the peach fuzz on my head.
… notice women in scarves and the memories come flooding  back as I stop to wish them well.
… contemplated tattooing areolas on my new nipples.
… studied my bald head in a mirror while singing, “Don’t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me.”
… can’t drink anything red because it reminds me of the chemo concoction.
… am one of those wearing a pink shirt at the breast cancer walk.
… am too fatigued to finish the breast cancer walk.
… have compared scars and reconstruction with other survivors.
… have been asked the question “Where would you like your nipple?
… have released a guide to navigating the breast cancer abyss titled *Where Would You Like Your Nipple?
… blog to remind others that EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES!

Rachel Brimble - Love's Debt - Interview and Giveaway

HL: I'm so happy to welcome fellow Brit Author, Rachel Brimble to my blog today as part of her CBLS Blog Tour.  Rachel is offering ten - yes ten lucky readers the chance to win a copy of her book on this blog tour, so don't forget to enter via Rafflecopter at the end of this post.

Have a glass of wine, Rachel and make yourself comfortable  - don't worry about being weightless, we can always turn on a little artificial gravity if you wish.  You kindly agreed to answer some of the questions buzzing in my head, so let's make a start, shall we.

If someone were to play one of  your characters in a movie, which character and actor would it be and why?
RB: I always use a visual for my hero and heroine when I start a book to keep me grounded in their physical characteristics. For Milly, (the heroine in Love's Debt), I used a photo of a young Alex Kingston…clearly influenced by her portrayal of Moll Flanders in the 1996 TV series.
Even though I say she has curls in the book, the girl on the cover has straight hair - it will be interesting to hear how readers imagine her, lol! :)

HL:  Yes, we don't always get the cover models we would have chosen ourselves, do we, although I have to say that is a really lovely cover, despite the straight hair. So tell me, what have you learned about writing since you were published that surprised you the most?

RB: The way people think writing is easy! Since I've been published, my writing has become a big source of conversation when I am out socially. It never ceases to amaze me that when someone tells a stranger I write, they will either ask what I really do all day/they might write a book when they have time/do I steal other people's ideas or once you've written one romance, it must be easy writing more! These people are serious and have no idea of the blood, sweat and tears that goes into writing. Nobody would put themselves through the pain by choice…it's a compulsion!

HL:  LOL, that's certainly very true, it's funny how the people who think writing is 'easy' are the ones who never actually get down to giving it a try! :)
Next question - do you listen to music when you write and if so, what kind of music – or do you find it distracts you?

RB: I've only ever listened to music while writing one book - Transatlantic Loving. It's part of the Wild Rose Press Class of '85 series and I played lots of '80s power ballads to transport me back to the era and make me feel as I did back then. It really helped to get the words and emotions flowing. As a general rule though, I need absolute silence to write but can edit to my heart's content with family and dog chaos around me as well as the TV on and the phone ringing somewhere in the background.

HL: . Do you have a support system? Do you have a writing community? What valuable lessons have you learned from them?

I have a great support system and wouldn't be able to produce the work I do without it. For emotional support, my husband has been amazing since I decided I wanted to write toward publication in 2004. He's supported me in my endeavours ever since my very first submitted short story.
Professionally, I have two fantastic critique partners who read my work, chapter per chapter as I write it as well as belonging to many online groups, the Romantic Novelists Association and Romance Writers of America. Support is an absolute must have in this industry.

HL:  Oh I couldn't agree more on that point! What is your personal definition of success?

Ah, now once upon a time I would've said getting a book published. Then I said, getting ANOTHER book published. Then I said, getting an agent. THEN I said securing a contract with Harlequin…now I've done all these things plus signed a two book contract with Kensington. You'd think I'd be happy but I still want more, lol! I am very ambitious and my husband has now given up asking me what else I want because I keep moving the goal posts :)

Success is feeling the joy of what you do - which I do, all the time. I'm a very happy girlie!

HL: That's fantastic, Rachel, and I think you're so right, striving to achieve even more, yet feeling joyful about what one is already achieving is so fulfilling and it wonderful when one realises just how far one has come and how much one is capable of. What is your favourite source of inspiration?

RB: Settings - especially for my historical work. I tend to visit a place and know that somehow it will become part of my next book, whether it be a character's home, the place they meet, the place they make love or the location of the black moment. I am lucky enough to live close to Bath and the Cotswolds which are steeped in British history. I am never short of inspiration.
For my contemporary work, I tend to be inspired by a moral dilemma or an emotional fear. That's usually the starting point.

HL: Oh, I'm a settings person too - although I write futuristic and fantasy the landscapes and legends of my native Wales have always been a huge inspiration - and the Cotswolds are beautiful and can certainly see why they would inspire you.  Thank you so much for being with us today, Rachel, it's been a real pleasure to learn a little more about you and your writing.

Before you catch the shuttle back to Earth, let's have a taster of your book:

LOVE'S DEBT
BLURB:
To keep herself from the depths of poverty, Milly Shepherd needs to be appointed manager of the Red Lion Tavern. The elderly owner is in failing health and has promised her the job permanently if no one more suitable applies. Milly will fight with her entire being to make the job her own.

Joseph Jacobs needs to supplement his income to pay off his father’s creditors and save him from debtor’s prison. Though the job as manager of the local tavern looks promising, Milly is favored by both the owner and customers.  Instead, Joseph swallows his pride and agrees to tend bar.

As they work together, their attraction grows, their goals cross, and both Millie and Joseph find they must face their fears …the question is whether they face them alone or together?

EXCERPT

“No, I take it from here.” His jaw tightened. “I mean it, Milly. I don’t want you in there.”

“Why are we arguing about this? I thought we’d built a trust between us.”

His gaze darted over her face, lingered at her lips. “This has nothing to do with trust.”

“Then what?”

“Pride. If I haven’t got that…if I’ve stooped so low as to put a woman at risk, then there’s no point in going on at all. I won’t do it, Milly. I won’t expose you to whatever is behind that door. If you can’t stay here, then go back to the tavern. I’ll see you there shortly.”

His face was set, his shoulders stiff and Milly’s irritation grew. She poked a finger into his chest. It was like iron. She swallowed. “Have you heard the saying, pride before a fall?” He nodded. “Good, because if people don’t reach out to other people, Joseph Jacobs, they fall further than ever with nobody there to catch them.”

“Milly--”

She raised her hand. “Go. Do what you want. I’ve got more important things to worry about that a man full of so much pride, he looks fit to burst.”

Turning, Milly gripped her bag tightly in her hand and strode away. She did not look back, and she didn’t stop walking. Her stupid heart had let her down. Made her get involved in a man’s life and begin to care about him. Well, the buck stopped there. No more. If Joseph Jacobs ever needed her help again, he could take a long walk off the dock.

Blinking against the rare sting of tears, she tilted her chin and retraced her steps across town. Her shift at the tavern started in an hour’s time, but that didn’t matter; there was always plenty to be done and at least there, she was appreciated. Joseph certainly didn’t see what was right in front of his damn face.

Yet each step that took her across town weighed heavier and heavier. She’d seen where he and his father lived. It was little better than a hovel. She’d seen the newspapers stuffed around the window frames in an attempt to keep out the cold, the bare floorboards, and thick layers of soot from the fireplace spilling into the room. The landlady should be seeing to that, all of it. Bitter resentment furled in Milly’s stomach as her past flashed through her mind. She’d pulled her family from the gutter, and the future looked brighter than ever before.

Which didn’t help the nagging feeling that she could do more—wanted to do more to help Joseph. But she couldn’t. It would mean putting a hold on her own plans. All for a man she had hardly known more than two weeks.

She curled her hands into fists. This feeling inside her was new. This sense of wanting to fight for someone outside of her family. How had it gotten like this? To kiss him was bad enough, but to have this…this fear for him? That scared her more than anything.

Giveaway and Guest Post - J A Garland Talks About Her Book Release -And Running With Zombies

I'm so pleased to welcome J A Garland to my blog today, to talk about her latest book 'Instinct' just released!

And while zombies may not seem to be fun for most people, apparantly that's not the case - let J A tell you all about the 'Run For Your Life Race' she ran recently.

(and don't forget to comment and leave your email address when you've read the post, to be in the running for your great 'swagbag' prize.)
First though, let's find out more about her book

INSTINCT
"When you've been betrayed, how do you balance revenge with trust?"

Blurb: Lone wolf, Rory Archer, never failed a single mission. Now the hunted instead of the hunter, Rory unwinds a twisted trail leading back to Amber Arlington, a spirited Halfling tied to a world of Shadows. Bound to vows initially forged out of necessity, Rory and Amber's relationship surges into more than either of them had bargained on.

Scrambling to identify their attacker before joining the casualty list, Rory is forced to do the unthinkable, or watch Amber become a slave for his species.

Excerpt: San Francisco, March 13, 0700 hours

Anxiety prickled Rory’s chest before fanning out to raise the hairs on the back of his neck. Dropping quickly, he pressed his torso and legs flat to the ground. Prone was never first pick, but a small silhouette was the best concealment the area offered. Lifting his head, he scanned the beach. Early morning waves rolled onto the shore, a salty surf leaching down to darken the sand. He twisted, angling to look overhead. No birds, no surfers, no stray animals. Nothing. The absolute absence of activity confirmed his instincts. Rory sprang to his feet in a protective half-crouch and turned, just in time to see a man come out of nowhere. Lowering his head and steeling his body, Rory head-butted his attacker square in the gut. “Shit!” The man grunted, expelling an angry rush of air as he hit the sand. Rory resisted the urge to leap back into the fray. He’d been in enough fights to know men with tunnel vision didn’t live to fight another day.

Giving himself a buffer, he took a few steps back. “I’m not here for you.” This wasn't the Otherkind Shadow whose dossier he'd spent the better part of the evening memorizing. Who was this man and why was he tangling with him? “Do yourself a favor and stay down,” Rory growled while looking around. Several distant figures headed their way from the north and the south. It was entirely possible they weren't friends of the man who'd tried to jump him. They could be nothing more than the early morning runners they appeared. But other runners never made him feel this on edge. Just what in the hell was going on?

“You might not be here for me, Wolf, but we're here for you,” the man said as he scampered to his feet, clearing away Rory's doubts about the approaching men. His wide smile was reminiscent of the smug expression Rory once saw carved into a coyote totem pole. Coyote slid effortlessly into the horse fighting stance, “Well, come on now. Don’t be shy. I promise to be gentle.” Anger replaced nerves, tightening his jaw and coiling in his limbs. Rory lunged forward, fists punching thin air as Coyote sidestepped, displaying remarkable speed and agility. Heart pounding and pupils dilating, Rory's wolf sensed the danger and awoke.

Snapping and snarling, the beast begged to shift and attack, but Rory couldn’t allow that. Not with his exit routes being what they were. Coyote shoved one leg into the sand for extra support, warning Rory he was going to try something. Sure enough, he kicked out lightning fast with his other leg, catching Rory in the right knee. Rory flexed with the blow so nothing broke. Using his attacker’s forward momentum against him, he grabbed a single fistful of his shirt and yanked him close. He stabbed four rigid fingers into Coyote’s throat. The man's eyes went wide, hands pawing at his neck as his carotid sheath dilated. The immediate dump of blood dropped Coyote to his knees.

Repositioning himself, Rory wrapped his arm around Coyote’s neck and cranked until he felt the vertebrae give way with a satisfying crunch. His heart still contracting wildly, Rory leapt to his feet. He dug his boots into the sand and raced away from the men who were closing in. In the last ten yards of his sprint his wolf railed against him, hating water the way a pump hates cavitation. Natural instinct saved his life earlier, but Rory didn't slow, instead prevailing against intuition to hit the surf at top speed before taking a lungful of air and diving under the foamy waves to safety.

RUN FOR YOUR LIVES

JA is third from left
Recently, a team of four brave souls participated in a Run For Your Lives--Zombie race, in Seattle, WA. Our mission, to traverse a challenging obstacle course through hundreds of walking and running dead while protecting three red flags hanging from a belt around our waists. The zombie's mission, to grab our flags before we crossed the finish line, thus making us one of them.
While there were many lessons learned during this event, they can be grouped into three main after action report (AAR) items.

1. Preparation
Conditioning: Make sure you are physically prepared. Our race was held on a BMX race course. Hazard flagging was strung along the outside perimeters of the trail, with zombies lurking right up to that line. Running off course in a cross country trek isn't an option, you must run the gauntlet with the rest of the stampede. For those of you who haven't seen a BMX course, picture hills so steep you have to use your hands to scramble up them. Then imagine that every five feet or so are horizontal lines of zombies waiting for you--and they aren't trying to get up the hill. Some of these zombies are runners, and some are walkers, but their common motivation is an insatiable desire for your flags. You better believe you're going to be sucking air trying to get up and around them.

Weather: Pull a NOAA weather statement for the date/time of your race. Being from out of the area, I should have done this. If I did, I would have pushed the group for an earlier start time. I didn't. I also stopped looking at the car thermometer when it hit 100 degrees. Who cares after that point? It was Africa hot, and as dreaded, I'd soon learn that I didn't pre-hydrate nearly enough.
Battle Dress: Test out your running attire before combat. My chosen ensemble was a pair of long, flared cuff running pants. Crawling on your hands and knees through 20 yard mud trenches meant I emerged with mud coated pants that were several times heavier. They also flapped around my ankles and threatened to trip me up with each evac and evasion maneuver.

2. Teamwork
I'd like to say everyone made it out alive, but in reality, our group had a 50% survival rate. Looking around, we were fortunate, other groups weren't nearly so lucky. I'd like to think that had something to do with our, 'take one for the team,' mentality. When two of us died, (yes, during mile two I succumbed to my injuries) we became the sacrificial lambs for the rest of the team. Coming up on a horde of zombies in the path, we would preplan a left or right hand run pattern with our team mates. Then we'd head in first so the zombies would give us chase, and our uninfected team mates could run an opposite pattern with less heat. It wasn't perfect, but it gave the survivors a fighting chance.

3. Go for the Gold
Aggression of action. I add this in, because thinking back, there was an individual who had strategy worth mentioning. He came at the zombies like they came at him. As if in a game of pigeon, he'd head straight for zombies, crazy in his eyes. Probably fearing an NFL type collision, the zombies would peel off at the last moment, and this guy would run through unscathed. Now, I'm not saying this tactic would work for everyone, I'm 5'4", so my psycho isn't going to be nearly as impressive as his 6', brick shit house attack.

If you were thinking about running a zombie race, I hope I've helped with your pre-game strategy and tactics. If not, maybe you'll consider trying one. If you do, let me know how it goes!

Something's Lost And Must Be Found - Virtual Book Tour and giveaway

HAPPY 4th JULY TO ALL MY AMERICAN FRIENDS!

As a dog lover and 'mum' to an adopted Jack Russell, I am thrilled to be part of Lisa Begin-Krusman's virtual blog tour for her book 'Something's Lost and Must be Found.'  I can't wait to read this, myself and from what I've seen of it, I think it would make a wonderful gift for animal loving friends

Blurb
The seven short tales in this collection were written by a dog-lover to be enjoyed by those who cherish or are guardians of man’s best friends. Each story stands alone, connected only by a theme of things “lost and found.” In each instance characters find resolution through the help of some search and rescue dogs of the soul; a mother coping with a tragic loss, a father trying to reconnect with his son, a teen-age girl dealing with some weighty issues, a jobless young man attempting to regain his humanity, a single woman searching for self-worth, and a loyal dog-owner watching over his beloved dog that is searching for his “true and happy home.”

These stories evoke that feeling a human gets when after letting a dog off-leash to run freely, their best furry friend returns for a mini-reunion, requesting to be led back home. At that moment all is right in the world. Even those who aren’t among the legion of dog-loving Americans can make a personal connection with these stories, one that resonates in some area of their life.

Excerpt From Title Story
I walked down the road calling “Tony, Tony,” like a robotic recording, wandering down to the shoreline where happy beachgoers and their dogs scurried and skidded in the sand, darting in and out of the foamy residue of receding waves. Scanning the horizon I hoped for a glimpse of Antonio, trying not to think of his fate if he’d been pulled out to sea by the tide.

Not ready to return home, I left the beach, traveling on a path that led away from the condo. Above me, twisted branches of Live Oak dripping with feathery grey Spanish moss arched and met forming a canopy. In the dark tunnel of trees I cursed this place, a place I had trusted to help me heal, no longer a last resort for hope; but a tourist trap of lost souls.

What had happened to my heart? I wondered bitterly. It had become so hardened that I’d been unable to offer love to a poor little dog when he’d needed it most. Now I would probably never get another chance.
