Lyn's Thursday Bits and Pieces

Hi everyone.  As promised earlier this week, I'm devoting Thursdays (or perhaps Friday if I have a prior booking) to chatting about me, my books, my animal friends, and anything else that pops into my head.

When I first started writing, and had my novel 'Starquest' accepted by The Wild Rose Press, I hadn't a clue what I was doing, or how to go about that all important thing 'promotion'.  Yes, that word strikes terror into the heart of most writers, especially new ones, because unless you're a best selling author who stands to sell millions of copies, you have to get the 'word' out about your book yourself, because very few publishers these days will do much in the way of promotion for you.  I was thrilled to be published by the Wild Rose Press, although as a British author, this made promotion even more difficult, because I had to try and promote to two audiences, so to speak.  The Wild Rose Press does with some of the promotion, but I still had a lot to learn and knew I had to do most of the work myself.

Now if you're a reader, you may be thinking that this writing lark is all about making money, but you would be mistaken  Don't get me wrong, if I were to suddenly sell millions and make enough money to return to my beloved Wales and buy the small horse farm of my dreams, I would be ecstatic. However, to be realistic, this is about as likely to happen as an alien landing in our small front garden and offering me a ride in his starship (although that would be very exciting.) Most writers, or at least most of the ones I know, write because they love writing, and make very little in the way of Royalties. Even when  our books are selling well, the return is usually not all that great, we have to purchase print books to sell at conferences or book signings ourselves, and pay subscriptions to organisations like the RWA (Romance Writers of America) or the UK based RNA (Romance Novelists Association). Then attending conferences, writers groups etc. all costs money, (and if the author self publishes the costs are even higher as they have to also pay for editing and cover design.)  So most of what we make tends to get ploughed back into the writing business.

The real reward is to know that one's book has touched someone's heart and they have  spent a couple of happy hours reading the book we worked so hard on.

Believe me, there is no greater thrill (apart from receiving  an acceptance letter from an editor) than receiving  a letter or email from a reader saying they 'loved' your book, or to see a five star review. What I'm trying to say, in a long winded way, is that in order to reach readers, you have to be able to let them know that your book exists - and there is no more supportive or helpful community than that of Romance Writers.  As I said, when I started out, I knew very little about the art of promotion, but soon discovered that there were many other writers out there, willing to host me on their blogs, mention me on the loops, and generally offer help and support.  To start with, most of these were other authors with  theWild Rose Press, but as time went on I got to know other authors with other publishers as well.

I have made so many friends among the writing community I can't count them, but each one of them is valued and special.   Several of them have become such close friends I feel I have known them all my life.  One such was Sharon Donovan, who having lost her sight and being unable to paint the pictures she so enjoyed creating, turned to writing and published some heart warming Inspirational romances and several wonderfully exciting romantic suspense novels.  Those of you who visit the Author Roast and Toast, the Blog I host with Mary Ricksen, P L Parker and Mac Crowne, will know  about 'Oliver' Sharon's hunky virtual butler, who she kindly allowed to 'moonlight' at the Roast, and who appears as a character in her WRP novellas 'Charade Of Hearts' and 'Kiss Of Death'.  She brought such fun to The Roast, where she was also a 'hostess.'  Tragically Sharon passed away a year today, after a second major heart operation.  She is sorely missed by all her friends, but she lives on in her books and our memories, and I will forever be grateful that I came to know her through  the world of writing and books.  I flew to the US last year and met up with Mary and together we visited Sharon's family, although it  was so sad that Sharon passed just a month before I was due to fly out.

So I'd like to raise a virtual glass in Honour of Sharon, and all the wonderful friends I've made, including the readers who are kind enough to leave comments  on this Blog.
Thank you all  for your continued friendship and support. And Sharon, I'm sure you're up there, watching over us and knowing that our friends still love and miss you. Your spirit lives on and you will never be forgotten.

PS:  If you get a moment, don't forget to visit me at Evelyn Cullet's Blog: http://evelyncullet.com/blog/

News Snippets

As most of you know, I help run a 'fun' guest blog with Mary Ricksen, P L Parker and Mac Crowne, 'The Author Roast and Toast' where we throw a virtual party to promote our weekly guest of honour.  A recent gest, Evelyn  Cullet was kind enough to invite us each to spend a week on her blog and today is my turn.  If you have a moment please pop along to http://evelyncullet.com/blog/  to say hello.  I'll be giving away a copy of my novella 'Dancing With Fate' to one commenter.

I've also decided that much as I love having other authors on my blog and promoting their books, I think it's time I came out of hiding and posted a little bit more about myself. So from Thursday I'll start doing a 'personal' post about me, my animals or my writing, with some sneak previews of my current WIP.

WATCH THIS SPACE!

Giveaway and guest post - Things your dog doesn't want you to know

“Why I Became a Writer”
By Hy Conrad

It’s always been my theory that the things that excited you as a ten-year-old, before all the limits and temptations of life lead you astray, are your true passions. For me, those early loves included mystery books, humor and dogs.

Since then, I’ve spent most of my life writing mysteries and owning dogs.  Two out of three. It wasn’t until the producers of the TV show  "Monk" hired me and threw me in with a bunch of comedy writers, that I developed enough confidence to try my hand at humor.

This book began with my friend , Jeff Johnson, and me watching an infomercial.  It could have been “Things The Banks Don’t Want You to Know.”  Or “Things The Government Doesn’t Want You to Know.”  At some point, one of us turned to the other and said, “Sure, how about ‘Things Your Dog Doesn’t Want You To Know.’”  And that’s how it started; the title came first.

Like many humor books, this one started out as a blog. Our first posts were on the most obvious topics: “What We Do When You’re Gone” or “Sticking My Head Out The Car Window.”

The initial idea was to keep them generic, in a sort of Everydog persona. But we soon realized that the humor was in the specifics. It was funnier if the dog had a real personality, and even funnier if we invented a variety of “dog bloggers” with radically different personalities.

For inspiration, we used Nelson and Charlie, our miniature Schnauzers, and spent a lot of time at the local dog park, mostly observing the humans, who always seemed clueless about their dogs’ behavior. If that wasn’t grist for a humor book…

A few weeks after we started, the site garnered enough attention to get a publisher calling.  That’s when the fun really began.

We wound up creating eleven dogs, from tiny and obnoxious (Tinkerbell, author of “My Life in Your Purse”) to large and dumb (Axelrod, author of “The Reason I Ate the Sofa”).   And we gave each dog an arc, which is a writerly term for “all the little stories add up to something.”  For example, Sarge is a German Shepherd and a working dog.  In each of his stories, he gets a new job and it always winds up being a disaster.  By the time Sarge tells his tenth story, he has finally been adopted by a great family.  But he still thinks it’s a job, and this one he doesn’t want to lose.

The blog morphed into a website called ThingsYourDog.com and it’s still up and running with new content all the time.  And if you submit a question about your own dog’s behavior, one of our 11 dog experts will answer it (in a humorous way, of course).

ABOUT THE BOOK

GENRE:  Humor, pets

PUBLISHER:  Sourcebooks

RELEASE DATE:  April 2012

SYNOPSIS

Why do dogs eat furniture when there are endless chew toys nearby?
Why do they always dash to a rug when they have to throw up?

And why are they always absolutely starving?

Things Your Dog Doesn’t Want You to Know answers the questions that dog owners have asked for centuries. The book is a collection of 115 humorous essays that reveal the truth behind some of the most baffling canine behavior, their hopes and dreams, their grudges and pleasures, and what they really think about us humans.  Peppered with lively, clever stories and visually appealing photographs, Things Your Dog Doesn’t Want You to Know is a verbal and visual delight that is laugh-out-loud funny.  If you have dogs, love dogs, or have ever been baffled by a dog, this book is a must-have.

Topics include:

  • My Life in Your Purse by Tinkerbell, the Chihuahua
  • Waiting by the Table (for food scraps, of course!) by Orson, the bulldog
  • The Bed Rules (Rule #1—It’s my bed) by Dimples, the boxer
  • The Reason I Ate the Sofa (leather tastes a lot like rawhide) by Axelrod, the yellow lab
  • I Can Poop the Second I Start My Walk (but choose not to) by Sophie, the cocker spaniel
Things Your Dog Doesn’t Want You to Know is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Indigo, Target, on e-books and at independent bookstores everywhere.  For more information, go to www.ThingsYourDog.com where you can also ask questions about your own dog’s behavior and learn the secrets they have been keeping from you!

PRAISE FOR THINGS YOUR DOG DOESN’T WANT YOU TO KNOW

“This is the perfect book for anyone who owns a dog, has ever owned one, or knows what a dog is. These guys made me laugh out loud—and captured my heart at the same time. The book is simply irresistible.” (Tony Shalhoub, star of the TV series Monk)

Zen of Slobber -Virtal Book Tour and Giveaway

As a dog lover I'm delighted to welcome Barbara Brunner to my blog today.  It is particularly fitting, in Breast Cancer Awareness month to have the privilege of featuring her book, which not only tells of stories of her rescued dogs but how one of them  saved her life. Don't forget to leave a comment for your chance to win a copy of your very own.

THE STORY
Barbara's vivid and dramatic stories, told with a wicked sense of humor, will make you laugh out loud. She definitely gets what living with rescued dogs (nine of them!) is all about.
When Barbara meets her future husband, Ray, it is love-and dog-at first sight. Over the course of thirty-two years, seventeen relocations and nine dogs, their mutual love of dogs guides them on their unconventional path. The love that Barbara and Ray get in return is literally lifesaving, with one dog attacking a lethal intruder and another discovering Barbara’s cancer. Her own survival story underscores the story of how her dogs become survivors themselves.

Each new dog adds its own dynamic to the family, sometimes upending it. From Turbo (whose Spock-like ears may have provided super powers), Barbara learns about the will to live; Lexington demonstrates incredible patience and an inexplicable love of golf; Madison teaches that laughter is truly the best medicine and that the whole “nine lives thing” is not reserved just for cats; Morgan should be sainted for tolerating Izzy, who is as cute as she is bad. Barbara is certain that somewhere in doggie heaven there is a poster that says “If you are sick, injured or in need of really expensive medical care, FIND THESE HUMANS!”

Dog-Ma:The Zen of Slobber
By Barbara Brunner

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Barbara grew up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with her parents, sister and always a dog, or two or three. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from a small women's college in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Meeting her husband in Washington, DC, they continued together on a journey as self-proclaimed dog addicts. In the ensuing years, she founded three successful businesses in the Pacific Northwest and is a prolific fundraiser for breast cancer research. She and her husband are retired and now reside in Southwest Florida with two dogs and copious amounts of dog fur. She is currently working on indulging her well known flip flop addiction.

 Houdini in a Dog Suit
At six months old, Madison got her first Invisible Fence collar.  It was huge on such a tiny little girl; a box three inches long and two inches square.  I think it weighed as much as her head.  She had been very good staying by Lexi’s side but we knew that would not last forever.  My office was in our guest wing and I had a wonderful view of the yard from my windows.  I had no hesitation leaving the three dogs free to roam their yard during the day.  One day I noticed Madison getting closer and closer to the fence limit and with a twenty-five-foot head start, ran at full speed and jumped at exactly the right moment to jump OVER the fence’s radio field.  Off she went.  By the time I got out to the yard she was gone.
We had a runner.

An hour later I found her at a home almost a mile away, standing in front of the kennels for their hunting dogs.  She was trying to break them out.  She was her father’s daughter. Once a hoodlum, always a hoodlum.

Kennel breaking was a skill Madison would become famous for.  When we traveled, we would board the dogs with our veterinarian.  In the morning they would arrive and find all of the boarded dogs running loose in the building.  This occurred every night and only when Madison boarded.  She could open a simple gate latch with her nose.  The hoop catches took a little more skill, needing both nose and paws.  She figured them all out quickly.  She even learned to open a peg latch with a twist bolt.  Madison had issues with confinement.  They finally had to put a combination lock on her kennel and retired it with fanfare the day we moved away.  Their nickname for her was:
“Houdini in a Dog Suit.”

Praise for Dog-Ma:
Barbara Brunner’s recounting of the comings and goings of a maddening modern life finds calm and grounding thru the love of her dogs. Laugh out loud when big slobbering licks and kisses offers solace while coping with a world somewhat insane.

If you are a dog lover, as we are, Barbara Boswell Brunner and her husband Ray are people you will be delighted to meet. Barbara's vivid and dramatic stories, told with a wicked sense of humor, will make you laugh out loud. She definitely gets what living with rescued dogs (nine of them!) is all about. This book will inspire you with the couple's unstinting love, devotion, and respect for dogs as family members. You'll be glad to include it in your treasured collection of great dog books.

Dinner at the Brunner's is always memorable.  When met at the door we're told "watch out for the Doberman he nips." The little white terrier jumps into your lap, very excited to greet guests, while their Rottweiler likes to scratch her back while working her way between your legs.   As a guest, one is immediately struck by Barbara and Ray’s ability to blend elegance and style with the warmth and primal curiosity of the canine family members.  Soon after walking into their home it is clear they share a sincere respect and love for an environment filled with style and natural beauty, but have equal passion and respect for the dogs in their life.  So often while visiting a home furnished with artwork, hanging on the walls, setting on tables, and coveted pieces of designer furniture, one might expect to feel a bit intimidated or overly cautious, concerned you might “touch” something.  However, at Ray & Barbara’s home, feeling the disarming positive energy of the dogs, one quickly finds the feelings of cautious appreciation transferred to awe and warm admiration for the amazing hierarchy of dogs swirling around the artwork……in an effort to be included in the conversation of the family and guests in the living room and at the dinner table! Dog-Ma, the Zen of Slobber tells these tales with humor and love.

Author Barbara Brunner Reveals How A Dog Saved Her Life in New Book.
The Doberman did not pull her from a burning building. He simply discovered her breast cancer.

Punta Gorda, FL – September 17, 2012 – Author Barbara Brunner, a self-proclaimed dog addict, weaves the poignant yet hilarious tale of her life with nine rescue dogs and the bonds that are formed from their shared survival stories.

Brunner draws on early life lessons to love all animals. The love she gets in return is literally lifesaving for both her and her dogs. From Madison, or Houdini in a Dog Suit to Cooper, the medical wonder-dog whose diagnosis was more accurate than a mammogram, their shared survival stores are captivating. Brunner says, “rescue dogs provide so much more than family companionship. They fill a gap in the soul. And...can empty out your wallet!”. She is certain that somewhere in doggie heaven there is a Most Wanted Poster of her and her husband that says “If you are sick, injured or in need of very expensive medical care...FIND THESE HUMANS!”
Isabella, Brunner’s Parson Russell Terrier, feels that she is quite misrepresented in the book, exclaiming “it’s lies...all lies...” to which Brunner has responded with a stack of veterinarian bills that would pale any challenger.
Dog-Ma, the Zen of Slobber is now available for $14.99 in print from Amazon and $ 8.99 in eBook format from Kindle, Barnes & Noble and iTunes.
It is also available in print, with an author signature, from www.DogmaTheBook.com.

Deep connections - author Rebecca Graf talks about her favourite books

Welcome to my blog today, Rebecca Graf, it's great to have you here.  Congratulations on the release of 'Deep Connections.'

There are so many wonderful books out there today, but Rebecca is going to narrow it down to her ten favourites:

Top 10 Favorite Books & Why

Narrowing down my favorite books is so hard. They are all so different and pull at me in different ways. Here is my feeble attempt to get you my favorite 10 though I did cheat a little and lump several together into one listing.

The Hunt for Red October – This was my first book within this genre and honestly did not think I’d like it. A neighbor suggested I read this when I was home from college one weekend. I took it and read it. I fell in love with Tom Clancy. I could read anything he wrote and love it. He does such an excellent job.

Nancy Drew Mysteries – These were some of my first chapter books growing up and I read them as fast as my mother could get them for me. I still read them today when I see one. They bring back the memories of advancing in my reading and growing up.

Wired
– This is a more recent novel that has hooked me. I’m actually getting ready to buy the sequel. This book is wonderful and Douglas Richards is an excellent author that gets you caught up in the mystery and keeps you guessing. Whena book has you wanting more from an author, it is a favorite.

Wings of Hope – This is another recent one that caught me. When a book has me wanting to get into deep discussions about it, it is a book that has hit my favorites list. This book pulled at me in many directions and I used up a tissue box by the end of it. Hillary Peak is an author that we will be hearing more of in the future.

Havah – Remember how I said I love books that get me wanting to talk about them. This one was very interesting and I would love to talk to others about that had read it. Tosca Lee takes the story of Eve and gives her much more dimension than what we are used to. Instead of being a character within a story, she becomes someone we can relate to

Twilight Series – No, I did not jump on the bandwagon with this one. I did not read the first book until after the third movie came out. I hate fads of any kind, but I had to give in after watching a scene within the second movie. Stephanie Meyers writes in a way that is very engaging and keeps the reader wanting more.

Till We Have Faces – I love anything by C.S. Lewis. This book was so different from what he normally wrote. It took a mythological tale and really gave it more depth. I could read this book over and over again.
Chronicles of Narnia – Speaking of C.S. Lewis…..This might have been written for children, but I think adults can get so much out of it. It is so deep that you might have to read it several times to see it all.

The Lord of the Rings – These epic tales are outstanding. I love them. Tolkien did an excellent job of creating a unique world and such wonderful characters.

Amanda Quick Books – I love mysteries and romance. Put them together and you really have me hooked. I love Amanda

EXCERPT

Brenna’s eyes fluttered open to see a blur of trees flying by. Her head pounded and her stomach began to roll from the pain she felt and the fast-changing scenery. A careful look at her surroundings told her she was in an older model car. She inhaled deeply to calm herself, but confusion set in as her senses were assaulted by unfamiliar smells. The old smell of the car was tainted with something repugnant and caused her nose to crinkle in response. Her eyes widened in fright as terrifying memories began to flood her mind.

Turning slowly, afraid of what she might see, a gasp involuntarily escaped her vocal cords when she saw he was as repulsive as she remembered. Who was he and what did he want with her?

Sensing her stare, a pair of dark, soulless eyes turned towards her. A smile appeared on his unkempt face. “Well, well, sleeping beauty awakes.” Brenna’s stomach rolled again as she felt his eyes slide hungrily over her body. She pushed up against the door in an effort to put as much distance between the two of them as she could, but he shook his head in disapproval.

“No need to be dramatic.” He turned his attention back to the road. “We both know you won’t jump out.”

She set her teeth and glared at him. Eyeballing her surroundings, she saw that there was no end to the trees that lined the road, no sign of civilization. She assumed they were still in the same state as when he grabbed her from the parking lot of the school where she taught. Deep down inside, she knew death awaited her no matter what. The look in his eye was not merciful. Yet jumping from the car to end her life seemed too selfish. As she was not one to keep such joy to herself, she quickly swung her body around and slammed into her abductor. Might as well let him in on the fun!

The force of her body colliding into his sent the car spinning out of control. She began fighting with all her might to prevent him from regaining control. Two sets of hands fought for control of the steering wheel. Profanities were shouted as the fight intensified. The car spun to the edge of the road where a small depression nestled in the forest. The tires left the ground when it hit the slight downward shift of the terrain, the car flipped and somersaulted twenty feet down the hill. As it took its final turn before slamming into a large pine tree, the passenger door flung open from the movement. Brenna thudded on the forest ground and barely missed a clump of trees. Stars exploded in her head and every bone in her body ached from the impact. She looked up to the fading light and let the darkness take possession.
