Book Description:

How far would you go for love?

Since losing her parents at 14, young prodigy Dr. Lydia Ashley has focused on one thing: an appointment on the Deep Water Research Command Endure. Now 21, she’s about to realize that dream, but nothing is how she imagined it would be. Her transitional sponsor forgets her, her new lab is in complete chaos, and, as if that weren’t enough, she’s about to discover something so horrific it could potentially destroy all life on the planet.

Daniel Brewer, a noted playboy and genius in his own right, may be exactly what she needs… Or he may make everything worse.

Has she finally found a puzzle she can’t solve?

Short Excerpt:

It hadn't been a lie. That last glass of champagne was probably a mistake. Lydia stared out at the shifting colors of sunset. Even if this little scheme didn't work at all, maybe it would clear her head some. She rested her hands on the stone railing of the balcony, watching the waves break over the sand.

"Gorgeous." Daniel's voice made her tighten her grip on the rail.

Lydia didn't look at him. "You don't see many sunsets under water," she said. "I'd almost forgotten how lovely they were."

He walked over and leaned next to her. "I wasn't talking about the sunset."

She hoped the changing light hid the pink in her cheeks. "Hmm. Your hypothesis lacks evidence to back it up, since clearly I wasn't attractive enough for anyone to actually invite to this thing."

Daniel winced. "Uh, yeah. About that..."

That was not the response she'd expected. "What, Daniel?" She looked at him accusingly.

He straightened and took a step back. "I may or may not have threatened to sever certain personal entertainment feeds for anyone that asked you."

Lydia stared at him, stupefied. "You... you threatened to disconnect their porn?"

"Well, if you want to be crass about--"

"Why would you do that to me, Daniel?" she yelled at him, shoving him, hard. All the rage she had been bottling up the last two weeks exploded out of her. "All my life, all of it, I have been too smart, too young, too intimidating, too... something, to be dated by anyone. The few times I was asked out somewhere, it ended with some guy asking me for a term paper or test questions so he could get a better grade or evaluation or something. And now, when I'm finally someplace welcoming, at an age where I'm not just a kid anymore, you decided issuing a threat to anyone who might even think of dating me is a good idea? What the hell, Daniel? Why? Why would you do that to me?" Lydia's eyes stung, but she would not cry. She. Would. Not.

Daniel's face was a mixture of fear and guilt. "You didn't hear them talking. I figured, anyone that would value porn over the chance at an evening with you, well, no one like that deserves you. I... I couldn't stand the thought of anyone else with you, Lydia."

She closed her eyes and turned away. "Then why not ask me yourself?"

There was a pause before he spoke. Whatever he had to say, it had better be good. "For one, I didn't want to cancel if my father decided I needed other arrangements. I thought if I waited until Friday morning and he hadn't pulled me by then I'd be safe. And for two..." His voice faded and she glanced at him.

"Well?" she prompted.

He swallowed, then exhaled in frustration. "Honestly, you scare the crap out of me, Lydia. I've never... I mean, you're the first and last thing I think about every damn day. I'm physically ill when I think I might not ever be the kind of person you deserve to be with. You make me want to be better at everything I do. I'm terrified whenever I screw up because I think I might never get the chance to kiss you even once, and if that were true I... I don't know if I could deal with that."

Of all the things he could have said to her, she couldn't imagine any of them being more perfect. Maybe it was all the champagne, but her anger evaporated.

He touched her bare shoulder. "Lydia, I'm sorry. I--"

She didn't let him finish. The word "sorry" had barely left his lips before hers were on them. It had taken every ounce of courage she had, but she had done it.

Daniel didn't respond for a moment. She thought maybe she had made a mistake, but his hand on her neck, and the other sliding around her waist eased her fear. His lips were warm, parting against hers. She thought she might actually melt at the sweet sensation. Her fingers dug into the fabric of his jacket, pulling him closer. Daniel's tongue tickled her own, encouraging her. The embrace grew heated very quickly and she didn't think she could stand much more.

Out of breath, she broke away. Unsure if her legs would hold her, she set a hand on the railing for support. She couldn't meet his eyes, anxious about what she might see there. He set his own hand over hers, entwining their fingers.

"Seems I was wrong," he whispered in her ear.

"Wrong?" Surprised, she looked up at him.

His empty hand touched her chin. "Well, now that I've kissed you, I'm not sure I can stop."

Lydia smiled. "And who's stopping you?"

He kissed her again, gentler this time, his mouth brushing her skin as lightly as the breeze coming off the ocean. At this, she came undone and lost any feeling in her feet. She laughed as he caught her. It was positively mortifying, but she couldn't care less. If it landed her in his arms, she would consider never walking again.

INTERVIEW
*************

S A Huchton
HL: Welcome. Make yourself comfortable, help ourself to a drink of something refreshing from the repli-bar, and tell us a little more about yourself , with three things not many people know about you.

SA:
1. I love watching people play video games. I don't play them much myself (outside of a few story/puzzle games), but I have actually tried to talk my husband into playing them more often so I can watch the stories unfold!

2. I spent over five years in the US Navy, and was not stationed on a ship for any of that time. To be fair, I did spend four years in Keflavik, Iceland, where I met my husband and two of my children were born, so it's not like I wasn't plenty busy.

3. If you had told me five years ago that I would be writing romance, I'd have called you crazy. It didn't occur to me until I was nearly thirty years old that maybe I would be good at it and/or enjoy it!

HL:  Wow! It's amazing what one learns about fellow authors on the Flight Deck! :) What comes first: the plot or the characters?

SA:   Every book is different for me. In the case of Maven, the setting and the characters were the first to emerge. The first book I ever wrote was based on the idea of what happens to a dream when someone isn't dreaming it. I'm typically a pantser and fill in the details as I go. However, I've just started a new project where an entire 2-book idea hit me full in the face, characters, plot and all (hello, sexy superheroes!). So, it's a mixed bag with me. Inspiration is everywhere!

HL:   Oh I couldn't agree more about inspiration. Tell us about Maven, and what you think readers will enjoy about it

SA: Maven is probably something a little different for a lot of people. It's categorized as New Adult SciFi Romance, but this tends to cause hesitancy in some readers. They get worried that SciFi means aliens or too much explanation of technology, but that isn't what they'll find in Maven. Above all else, it's a New Adult story (set only forty years in the future) about two young people learning to function in the world beyond childhood and adolescence, and exploring what it means to love another. Every bit of science within the story is explained on a level anyone can understand, as I myself am not a scientist. I love the ideas science puts forward, but not so much the math and complex explanations behind it. What readers will find in Maven is enough information to understand what's going on in the plot without being overwhelmed by terminology. I love the idea of entertaining while maybe imparting a little knowledge. Maven will give you a sense of the fantastic while still keeping your feet on the ground. Or, under water, as it were. :)

HL:  I can certainly relate to much of what you say abovel  As a SF Romance writer myself, I have to admit I'm no scientist or mathematician either, but researching just enough to make the plot plausible and not drown the reader with facts is part of the fun isn't it.

I'd love to know - if someone were to play one of your characters in a movie, which character and what actor would it be and why?

SA:  I actually had to think about this one a long time. In the end, I narrowed it down to one of two Emmas to play Lydia: Emma Watson or Emma Stone. Brains are a requirement when it comes to portraying my heroine, and either of those two ladies would be a good fit. And I pretty much love anything they've ever been in ever.

For Daniel, I took to Google and searched around for a good casting match there. What I found actually surprised me. I ran across a picture of a young Jensen Ackles and my jaw dropped. While he's a bit too old to play him now (as Daniel is only 22), Jensen's appearance and mannerisms are really really close to what I envision for Daniel. So, I guess if you could bring someone from the past into the future for such a role, that would be my pick. This really did surprise me as I haven't watched Supernatural since the first season. And I always preferred Jared Padalecki on that show anyway. So there's that.

HL:  Great choices! Do you have a support system? Do you have a writing community? What valuable lessons have you learned from them?

SA: My support system seems to expand on a daily basis. I started out with a group of folks in the Second Life game who were all participating in NaNoWriMo. While I don't play any more, some of those connections still persist today, including someone who's become my "creative sounding board" and first line of defense in everything I write. When I dipped my toes into the realm of podcasting fiction, I was suddenly surrounded by a whole troop of authors who were ready and willing to offer every piece of advice they had. Really, I can't thank those folks enough for all the support they've given me in the last four years. Some of them have become great friends of mine, and are endlessly giving of their time. Within the last year I've started making connections in the Romance, YA, and NA communities of writers, bloggers, and readers as well. The indie author support in these groups of people has been astounding! There is a constant extension of helping hands reaching out wherever I turn. In everything from the mechanics of writing, to the navigation of blog tours and cover reveals, I've learned so much from them I can't even begin to list it all. I have to make mention of the SFR Brigade as well, as they're also incredibly supportive of authors within the SciFi Romance genre and help each other at every opportunity.

HL:    Oh, that's interesting, I'm a member of the SFR Brigade as well, and as you say, the support of other authors is amazing and so valuable

What sort of research do you do for your books and what’s your favourite source of information.

SA: Given the contents of this book, I definitely did a lot of research. I mined the web for information on everything from UEFA soccer schedules to Hawaiian hotels to marine microorganisms to computer security technology. But I think my favorite method of finding the information I needed for my fiction was the conversations I had with friends and contacts working in professions associated with some of the topics I hit on in Maven. My husband has his undergrad in microbiology and his masters degree in computer science, so a lot of my info came from him. However, my Twitter timeline is full of all sorts of interesting people, so I used that for sources too. In order to have the story make sense and not confuse anyone, I needed to be sure I understood the science myself, and these conversations were instrumental in that. My notes probably look like lesson plans for kindergarteners, but, really, I had to make it simple. Because I'm more inclined to art and music than science and math, it was a challenge to condense the ideas into something a reader could easily wrap their head around without any prior experience. I figured, if I could get a handle on it, anyone else could too.

HL:  Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

SA:  While I love both Lydia and Daniel, I think if I were to befriend any of the characters in this book it would be Cordellia Orietti (Cordy for short). Especially after working on books two and three (which are complete and coming soon) and what's in store for her in book four, I absolutely adore her spunk and sass. She has a no nonsense attitude and is both a loyal friend and fierce defender of those close to her. Cordy works in the Administration department on the Endure, but what you learn about her as the story progresses in the later books really shows that there's more to her than being a paper pusher. She's proof that you can be a girly girl and still kick some butt when the situation calls for it. It doesn't hurt that she's pretty smart in her own right as well.

HL:  She sounds a wonderful character.  I love girly heroines, who can still 'kick butt'! :) Where can readers connect with you?

SA: I am all over the web, but here are a few places people can find me:

HL:  Fantastic! Sadly time has run out and I have to return you to Earth. Thank you so much for taking time to visit my blog, it’s been a thrill having you here and learning more about you and your writing. I wish you much success now and in the future.

Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation--favorite character was Data by far--and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.

Excerpt:
A drone, as deep and low as the growl of a primordial beast, resonated in my gut and I yanked my hand away. My heart sped like someone had fired a starter gun to a race, and my chest tightened until I couldn’t breathe.

That blaring blasphemy wasn’t from my ship.

The sound tapered off, leaving me in silence. I stared at the bones, wondering if I’d imagined it, or if I should hide here in the ruins in case the sound came back.

What am I doing? I’m a team expedition leader, for crying out loud!

I pulled myself back together. Everyone else was attending the ceremony on the ship. The thick hull, designed to protect us from deep space, blocked all sounds from the outside world. I was the only one who would have heard it. The only one who could investigate. I thought about going back for help, but every second I delayed, the source of the sound could disappear. Besides, I didn’t want the credit taken away from me. Not this time.

I scrambled to the window and climbed over the ledge, throwing myself down so fast my ankles exploded in pain. Cursing, I hobbled up the embankment of the excavation site. The sound boomed around me, vibrating the crystals underneath my feet. I fell to my knees and covered my ears. It reminded me of warping metal, growling monsters, and screeching alarms all at the same time.

The sound came from the jungle. I pulled myself up the incline and peered over the edge. A dry, fiery breeze blew my hair back, and I looked above the rustling canopy.

My heart stammered then beat into a frenzy. A massive ring of a ship, twice as large as the New Dawn, hovered over the jungle. Spires jutted from the top and the bottom, like a two-sided pin cushion. Blinking reddish lights adorned the ends. The hull was a dull gray shield of impenetrable metal with no sight panels or markings of any kind.

The buzzing sound made my eardrums throb. I pressed my nose up against the crystal ledge and peered over as my whole body shook. The lowest spire, thick as a nuclear reactor, lengthened from the belly of the ship until the tip hovered a meter from the jungle canopy. A trap door opened, and a beam of white light seared a hole in the foliage. The smell of burnt vines choked my throat, and I cowered against the side of the ledge.

I have to warn the ship.

About the Author:
Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be “a concert flutist” when she grew up. She majored in flute performance at the University of New Hampshire on a full scholarship, then secured two teaching jobs at a University and a local community music school. While playing in orchestras and teaching, stories popped into her head, and she used them to make the music come alive for her flute students. Her students said they were so good, she had to write them down! Maybe they were right, who knows? Two careers seems to keep her busy. For now.

She is represented by Dawn Dowdle and writes sweet and adventurous fantasy, science fiction, and contemporary romance.

21 February 2013

Rebecca Sweeney Graf's February Author Hunt.

There are bloghops - and bloghops! The one I'm taking part in today, organised by Rebecca Sweeney Graf,  is just a bit different.  You have to find the answer to a list of questions found in the Rafflecopter contest on her site HERE

This is for one day only and every answer you get right entitles you to an entry, thanks for organising this, Rebecca.

To make it easy for you, I'm going to tell you a bit about myself and most of the answers will be in this post.  If not you'll find them elsewhere on the blog, but they shouldn't be too hard to find.

So first of all, the question I get asked most often is - where did I get my name from? Is it a nickname, or my penname, or what? Well, my first two names are Hywela and  Lyn.  I was always called just Lyn by my family and friends since I was a baby.  When I published my first novel, 'Starquest', a 292 page futuristic romance with the Wild Rose Press, I thought it was a shame not to use my first name, Hywela, so I tagged it on to my second name, rather than using my surname,  and became 'Hywela Lyn'.  I'm occasionally called by the nickname 'Lindylou' by people who know me well. I was born and lived most of my life in Wales until I married and moved to England because of my husband's job.  Hywela is Welsh and also has Celtic and Arthurian derivations and means 'sharp sighted'

Starquest was followed by a sequel Children Of The Mist and I was also commissioned to write a novel about a Greek Muse for the Wild Rose Press series Song Of  The Muses.  When the print version was pulled I requested my rights back and, along with several other authors in the series,  republished it myself as a stand-alone novella, Dancing With Fate, which is available on Smashwords and Amazon. (You can read the first chapter of all three stories in the sidebar on the right.)

My current WIP is another follow up to Starquest, which will make then make it a trilogy, with a working title of 'Beloved Enemy'. These three books are all 'futuristics' and although technically Science Fiction, they are very much romances and I hope people can relate to the characters and their trials and tribulations and grow to love them and root for them as much as I do.  I do tend to put my heroines through the mill a bit, but they always find their h.e.a. in the end, making it all worthwhile. I love to write about distant and imaginary planets. Like Jess in Starquest, I love the stars, and can' t believe out of all those myriads of stars, there aren't planets up there supporting life. So if you were to ask me if I believe in aliens, the answer has to be 'yes'.

I'm, a chocoholic, and love anything with chocolate.  I prefer a chocolate desert to the main course, in fact! I'm not going to tell you my favourite colour - but the answer should be fairly obvious, and if not, it will be mentioned a bit further down in this post. As I said, I'm originally from Wales and go back whenever I can to see my family and friends.  We usually manage to spend New Year with my sister, there.  She lives on top of a hill, surrounded by rolling countryside and with a view of the sea. I love it there. She has horses and a dog and a little grandson who is just gorgeous. While I was there I started the New Year off with  'No Such Thing As Immortality' by Sarah Tranter, which is the debut novel of this talented UK writer who I have also had the pleasure of meeting in person. If you like paranormals whose immortal heroes have a touch of 'Mr Darcy' about them, I think you'll enjoy this one as much as I did.

I also have another sister who lives a few miles away from there and is mad on cats. She gave me one of my favourite Christmas gifts - a gorgeous purple 'hoodie' with silver horseshoes on, which is not only smart but keeps me nice and warm when I'm out with my adopted Jack Russell terrier and my two horses, Harri and T'pau.

Molly
Unfortunately we don't have any land of our own the  horses are kept several miles away from where we live, but we manage to visit them every day to feed and tend to them. We also have a resident rescued  'ferel' cat there, to keep down the rats and mice, and she is now as much part of the family as my dog and the horses. I am, and always have been, a country person.  The one thing that really scares me is busy streets, I hate having to cross a road with streams of traffic! Give me narrow wild lanes and countryside any day!

One of the craziest things I've ever done was to try to lead a dog from my horse – something spooked horse,  horse went one way, dog another and I ended up in a heap in the middle.  Fortunately no-one hurt! I didn't try that one again!

As you may have gathered, I love animals, especially horses. My favourite author as a kid was Lorna Hill, who wrote a lot of 'pony' stories, and my 'imaginary friend' wasn't another child, but a black pony called Jet.   I wanted to be a riding school owner when I left school,  but sadly never had the financial resources to achieve that dream. I actually had to save up for five years to buy my first horse, but I am now living another dream - that of being a writer.

Harri and T'pau
Finally, three snippets of information that not everybody knows. I love films, although I tend to watch most of them these days as DVDs.  My current favourite is Les Miserables, not only because it is such a wonderful story, but the music is so gorgeous too.   I  once saw a ghost appear in a photograph I took at a writing retreat,  and I've always hated cabbage.

Ok there's more information about me in the above post than you probably ever wished to know! :) However, it's all in keeping with the instructions for this Blog hop. So enter your answers below and Good Luck.  The prize I am awarding for this Blog is a copy of Starquest and a $12 Amazon Gift  Certificate.

Starquest and Children of the Mist are both avalable from The Wild Rose Press (Where you can also download a FREE short fantasy romance) and

The Romance Madness Blog Hop

I'm excited to be taking part in the Romance Madness Hop.  It runs from January 25 to 29 (Friday to Tuesday) so you have five days during which you can take part. There are over Fifty blogs taking part, so the more you visit and comment on, the more chances you have to win.

I'll be giving away a copy of my fantasy novella 'Dancing With Fate' and a $6 Amazon voucher.

I have to write about one of my favourite romances.  Ah, there are so many, and I'd love to mention some of my wonderful author friends out there, but how could I choose just one or two?  Instead. the one I have chosen is one of the first Science Fiction stories I ever read, by a world famous author, Anne McCaffrey.  It's not strictly speaking a romance, in the way most people these days think of a romance, but it is certainly a love story and I was and still am, very moved by it.

The Ship Who Sang was published in 1969 and is a science fiction novellette, the first of five stories published between 1961and1969.  The stories became a series known as The Brain & Brawn Ship series, and are set in the future, in the Universe of Anne McCaffrey's Federated Sentient Planets.

PURCHASE
Helva is a human being, born with a severe physical disability.  The parents of babies with such physical disabilities but fully developed and exceptionally talented brains, are given the choice of allowing them to become "shell people" rather than to be euthanased. Taking that option, physical growth is stunted, the body is encapsulated in a titanium life-support shell with capacity for various roles  in their adult life. As such, they suffer no pain and  live a comfortable existence in a metal shell for several centuries, performing unusual service for Central Worlds. After medication and surgery, general education, and special training, shell children reach adulthood with heavy debts which they must work off in order to become free agents. They are employed as the "brains" of spacecraft ("brainships"), hospitals, industrial plants, mining planets, and so on, even cities.

Helva becomes the "brain" of a starship.  A brainship is able to operate independently but is usually employed in partnership with one physically fit person called a "brawn" who travels aboard the ship as its pilot. A brawn is specially trained to be a companion and helper, the mobile half of the partnership. Their  training is long and intense and the brawns also need to have a high level of intelligence. Helva is no mere cyborg though, her human side is very evident. She laughs, reads, Shakespeare, listens to opera - and sings! Helva chooses a young man called Jennan as her "brawn".   As they get to know each other, their relationship develops to a deep and genuine love, despite the lack of any physical contact. The story ends on a tragic but very moving note, with Helva singing 'taps', but I don't want to give too much away, apart from saying that If you love SF romance, as I do, this is one story about an enduring love, that will stay in your mind long after you've read it.

I was so captivated by 'The Ship Who Sang" and later on by Anne McCaffrey's "Dragon" Series, that I wrote to her and asked if she had any advice for someone wishing to write - to my surprise I received a lovely postcard back from her, telling me to "write what I would like to read". I've never forgotten that advice, and and although my books published so far, Starquest, Children Of The Mist, and Dancing With Fate are  quite different to "The Ship Who Sang" or indeed, the "dragons of Pern" they certainly owe much to that piece of advice from a wonderful writer.

Anne McCaffrey passed away in November 2011, but she wrote a great many books, and several amazing series. Although she always termed herself a Science Fiction writer rather than a Fantasy writer, and would probably never have thought of herself as a romance writer, certainly all her stories have a strong romantic thread in them - but for me 'The Ship Who Sang' is the most beautiful and poignant of all.

Aubrie Dionne Guest Post and my Review of Paradise 21

I was really happy to review this book - I've read and enjoyed some other works of Aubrie Dionne's and couldn't wait to read this one. I wasn't disappointed.  Here's My review:

Aries Ryder escapes from the only home she has ever known, the starship ‘New Dawn’. The ship is the last hope of mankind, fleeing from a dying Earth. Her destiny, like all females on board the ship, is to mate with a man chosen for her, and determined by genetic testing, in order to produce the next generation, for none of the present occupants of the ship will see the planet they’re headed for. Her chosen mate, Lieutenant Astor Barliss, holds no charms for her.  She begins to question the rigid regime she's lived under all her life and decides to escape. The gravitational pull of Sahara 354 causes her pod to crash on the desert planet.

Aries encounters another human, an Outlander named Striker, one of the ‘pirates’ despised by the inhabitants of the ‘New Dawn. Together, they face the dangers of the planet, but Barliss is not about to give up his chosen mate without a fight.

One of the things I really liked about this book was that I found myself getting fond of, and empathising with not only the main characters, but the secondary characters as well, even though they had faults and issues, it was difficult not to feel a certain sympathy with the situation in which they found themselves. Even Barliss displays a glimpse of vulnerability at one stage, and Tiff is not a bad person despite her betrayal of Striker.

The action-packed adventure proceeds at a fast pace, with the occasional tender interlude between her and Striker, although Striker does not seem as smitten with Aires as she is with him. He has been betrayed by one woman and is not about to allow it to happen again. They battle several different kinds of alien monster, including the ‘sandworms’ which reminded me quite strongly of the ‘Dune’ novels.

I have to admit I thought I knew how it was all going to end up, but just when I thought I’d predicted correctly, Aubrie cleverly managed to turn things on their head and neatly tied up all the ends. As a reader I was left with the feeling that everyone got exactly what they deserved - and it wasn’t necessarily what one would have expected at the beginning of the story. Despite the trauma and dangers  there is a ‘feel good’ ending and Striker and Aries are not only rewarded with being together at last, but are responsible for saving an entire species. A thoroughly enjoyable read, especially if you like your SF romance sweet rather than ‘hot’, although there is plenty of sexual tension and page turning suspense.

Now let's hear from the Author herself, Aubrie Dionne, and her thoughts on:

Bad Guys in Sci fi and Why We Love Them

#1. Darth Vader
There are so many reasons to love and hate Darth Vader. At first we think he’s purely evil, but when we learn of the backstory in Episode three, we pity him. He has so much power, but nothing he can do can change Padme’s destiny. In the end, he does a complete one eighty and turns back to the good side. We don’t see this in every villain, and it’s hard to write in a character, but when Luke Skywalker is calling for his father’s help, and Darth Vader decides to turn good, we believe it. He is an excellent, three dimensional bad guy with reasons for his evilness.

#2. The Borg
The Borg in Star Trek the Next Generation really creeped me out. They were relentless, and the idea of losing your identity to join a collective mind is chilling. Not only do you buy into their hive mind philosophy, but you become one physically as well. Jean Luc Picard is taken by the Borg and assimilated. He still has nightmares of his time with them. They aren’t evil, they’re just another species trying to survive. They can’t make their own offspring, so they must assimilate those around them. Very scary, cool bad guys.

#3. Ra in Stargate
The coolest thing about this bad guy is that he’s actually an alien who has taken the form of a young boy. When he’s angry, his true colors shine through and you can see the alien eyes beaming out of his head. He isn’t evil, he’s just greedy and lazy. The last one of his kind, he’s found a way to live forever by mining a particular mineral. Only, he doesn’t want to do it himself, he want to enslave the people on Earth and make them mine the mineral for him.

#4. The Body Snatchers
The scariest thing about the body snatchers is that they look just like the people you love. They come from space and grow into giant pods. When you fall asleep next to one, they steal your body by creating another you, then go about living your life as an emotionless zombie. Pretty scary, and very cool if you ask me.

Who is your favorite sci fi bad guy? Have I left any great ones out?

Thank you so much for that fascinating insight into 'Bad Guys' in Science Fiction.  I think my own favourite has to be 'Q'.  He was always a thorn in Picard's side, arrogant, and full of his own importance - but then he was all powerful and there was something very charismatic about him, don't you think!  Anyway, without further ado let's read the blurb and an excerpt for your wonderful story!

A New Dawn Book One by Aubrie Dionne
Book Blurb:

Aries has lived her entire life aboard mankind’s last hope, the New Dawn, a spaceship traveling toward a planet where humanity can begin anew—a planet that won’t be reached in Aries’ lifetime. As one of the last genetically desirable women in the universe, she must marry her designated genetic match and produce the next generation for this centuries-long voyage.

But Aries has other plans.

When her desperate escape from the New Dawn strands her on a desert planet, Aries discovers the rumors about pirates—humans who escaped Earth before its demise—are true. Handsome, genetically imperfect Striker possesses the freedom Aries envies, and the two connect on a level she never thought possible. But pursued by her match from above and hunted by the planet’s native inhabitants, Aries quickly learns her freedom will come at a hefty price.

The life of the man she loves.

 Excerpt:

“Might as well stay here and make camp for the night.”

His casual tone stung her composure. How could he talk of such mundane things when they’d almost been captured, when she’d touched him so tenderly?

“We’ll let them get farther away,” Striker explained, reasonable as always. “We’re going in their direction tomorrow.”

The sting of rejection grew, burning a hole in her heart. “Why?”

“Why what?”

Her lips trembled. “Why not kiss me like you did before?”

“I can’t.” He shook his head, and the air cooled between them; so much so, Aries wondered if the desert had turned into deep space.

He’d teased her with such affection before, it was cruel to take it away. “I don’t understand,” she said, wishing she didn’t care, wishing she could stop all the emotions he’d started in her heart.

Aries caught a glimpse of pain etched in the wrinkles around his eyes. Striker turned away and started pulling supplies out of his backpack. “I can’t do this.”

“Do what?”

Striker shook his head and Aries prompted, “Can’t kiss me, can’t trust me? What?”

“I can’t allow myself to get tangled up with someone. Not again.”

The thoughts of Striker with another woman confused her. On the New Dawn, everyone had one lifemate and that was it. “You mean you loved someone before?”

Striker’s hand tightened on the backpack. “I trusted someone a long time ago, allowed myself to love, if you will. She hurt me so much I lost my entire life and ended up here. I can’t experience that kind of pain again.”

Aries clasped her hand over her heart. “I’m so sorry.”

He waved her apology off as if it meant nothing. “It’s a tough world, Aries. And it’s dangerous to love. If I were you, I’d keep my heart well-guarded, because you never know when it will affect your decisions, when it will make you weak.”

Aries couldn’t take his advice. Watching him talk about his past made her realize she’d already given up her heart.

He had it.
