Dylans Song - P M Terrell Guests on Hywela Lyn's Blog

I'm so pleased to welcome pm terrell to my blog today. She's going to tell us a bit about that most important aspect of writing the novel - characters.  Over to you, pm.

CREATING CHARACTERS

Ever since my first suspense was released eleven years ago, I’ve been asked to write a series. I had always resisted because I didn’t want to become a formula writer, where the plot and the ending became predictable.

A few years ago while combing through declassified documents I stumbled upon the psychic spy program in use by the United States Government. The idea of having a main character who works as a CIA psychic spy intrigued me. It opened up a world of possibilities for plots, as the main character could go anywhere in the world and become involved in all sorts of international intrigue and suspense.

I studied some of the real psychic spies and developed Vicki Boyd’s character by blending the real side effects of being a psychic spy with a little bit of my own character. Like a writer, Vicki lives mainly in her own head; she travels the world and experiences fascinating scenes—but while mine are imaginary, hers are not.

When she meets Irishman Dylan Maguire, she finds he is in many ways her opposite. Charming, outgoing, charismatic, he lives life in a big way—whether it’s through his romance with Vicki or through his CIA assignments. Unlike Vicki, he has no psychic abilities but is a ground operative, often carrying out assignments based on Vicki’s Intelligence gathering.

I knew in Vicki’s Key, the book in which Dylan was first introduced, that she would have to fall quickly in love with him because it would become essential to the book’s plot. So I researched the type of man women fall for easily. Number 1 was the Scottish man; number 2 was the Irishman; and number 3 was Australian. I chose Irish because I am from Irish ancestry and I felt a connection to that country. I also learned that women love five o’clock shadows—so Dylan has one—and I gave him other characteristics that women sought in a man: good-humored, romantic, sexy, loyal—and capable of physically protecting Vicki.

A third character in the series is Brenda Carnegie. Before I became a full-time writer, I worked in the computer industry, where my specialty was computer crime and intelligence. But while I always worked on the right side of the law (usually with federal or local law enforcement), Brenda is a computer hacker who prefers the dark side. She is Vicki’s complete opposite—and she is also Vicki’s sister. By making them blood relatives, it ensures they stay together, even though they are so dissimilar. Their opposite character traits also lends itself to friction and drama, though they always pull together when the situation warrants it. In some ways, Brenda reminds Dylan of himself—the parts of himself he would rather not see—which also makes for some interesting interaction.

With such diverse characters, I can move between them to create a well-rounded series that is always surprising, always suspenseful, and always unique. Depending on the plot, I can bring one or more to the forefront while the others become supporting characters for a time, much like a TV series with an ensemble cast.

Thank you so much - I love finding out how other authors create their characters. Now let's find out a little more about your book:

DYLAN'S SONG
By
P.M. Terrell

BLURB:

Dylan Maguire returns to his native Ireland with psychic spy Vicki Boyd. Their mission: to locate and extract a CIA Agent who disappeared in Dublin while on the trail of a known terrorist. But when Dylan receives word that his grandmother is dying, he is plunged into a past he thought he’d left behind forever. His mission and the dark secrets he’d sought to keep hidden begin to merge into an underworld that could cost him his life. He must now confront his past demons and the real reason he left Ireland—while Vicki harbors a secret of her own.

Suspense Magazine says, “p.m.terrell’s writing is powerfully written and masterfully suspenseful; you have to hang on for the ride of your life.” Midwest Book Review says the Black Swamp Mysteries series is “page-turning action, unforgettable characters, breathtaking descriptions and unexpected plot twists.” And syndicated reviewer Marcia Freespirit says the series is “riveting, spell-binding, sexy and intense!”

EXCERPT:

The bogs were no place to be during the witching hour.

Dylan had grown up with stories of the bogs at night. The ground percolated; it lived and it breathed. There had been many a time when he was harvesting peat in broad daylight that he’d heard a whisper at his ear or felt hot breath on his neck, only to find there was no one near. Now as he rode his horse in silence, he felt that presence tenfold; there were eyes watching them. The intermittent tuffs of heather swayed in the growing storm and he found himself watching them with narrowed eyes, waiting for the plants to morph into sinister creatures that claimed this land after the sun went down.

He knew there was a simple reason why animals were required in lieu of an all-terrain vehicle and he was glad Sam had taken this unique land into consideration when planning the mission. He could feel the hooves beneath him sinking into the spongy earth; a wheeled vehicle wouldn’t have stood a chance, especially as they ventured from the area farmed for its peat to one far less stable.

A mist began; a slow, fine spray that he knew well. One moment the air was still and dry and the next, as though they’d passed through a curtain, the air swirled around them, the moist haze further inhibiting their ability to see. It was said many a man lost his internal compass in the Irish mist; it taunted as it grew into monstrous shapes, turning the landscape into something foreign and active.

Sacred Breath - Blog Tour and Review

I'm delighted to feature Nadia Scrieva on my blog today, and to have had the privilege of reading and reviewing 'Drowning Mermaids' the first of her 'Sacred Breath' series.

BLURB:
Deep under Arctic waters lies an ice kingdom carved into a glacier. Those who dwell within it possess magnificent biological secrets. Due to the dangers of impending war, the Princess of Adlivun is forced to flee her undersea utopia and regroup with her sisters in Alaska.

Captain Trevain Murphy is a successful king crab fisherman who has spent his life building his empire above the sea, and knows nothing of the empire beneath it. When he meets a mysterious dancer whose father has recently died, he extends kindness towards her, unaware of her unique genetics and royal lineage.

Trevain's attraction to the enigmatic Aazuria Vellamo will involve him in dangerous designs that will forever change his life, and his perspective on himself and his world. He embarks on perilous journeys in which he will need to release all of his insecurities and inhibitions in order to survive.

My Review

Put aside any preconceived idea of mermaids with scaly  tails sitting on rocks and combing their hair with a sea urchin. This book portrays mermaids in a completely different light, combining a wealth of imaginative fantasy with a sprinkling of scientific rationale for their extended life and ability to live beneath the water.

I was immediately drawn  to Trevain. He comes across as gentle and courteous, and not as rough and coarse as one might expect a seaman to be, although as Captain of the Magician he exerts a calm authority and his concern for his men is one of the qualities that endeared him to me.  I even forgave him for his roughness toward Aazuria toward the end, since I felt this was because he was so worried for her and frustrated by her insistence on placing herself in danger.

Aazuria herself is a young woman who is easy to identify with (although she is actually a lot older than the 18 years her outward appearance suggests.) She is by turns vulnerable, strong, witty and sensitive, and well able to handle herself. I liked the way she cared about her sisters and interacted with them. There are moments of humour to balance the sense of tension and mounting danger as the story progresses. My one criticism is that at times there seemed to be a lot of 'telling' rather than 'showing' and sometimes the POV switched between characters a little abruptly, so I had to check back to see who was actually talking.  This did not detract too much from my enjoyment of the book however, and I grew more and more absorbed in the story, and involved with the characters.

There are many elements to this story which give it an appeal to a wide range of readers, Science Fiction, fantasy, mystery and adventure. I was gripped by the story line and totally absorbed by it. I want to find out more about Aazuria's underwater kingdom and its inhabitants and I'm now looking forward to reading the next in the series, Fathoms of Forgiveness.

All reviews on this blog, of books by other authors, are my own, personal opinion. I received a free copy of 'Drowning Mermaids',  but not in an effort to control the outcome of said review. No compensation has been paid or accepted for any reviews on this site, favorable or otherwise

Here's an excerpt to whet your appetite - and don't forget to check out the fabulous trailer that follows it!

EXCERPT

“Go at once, Naclana,” Aazuria ordered, in a tone of voice which could not be disobeyed.

Naclana bowed deeply, recognizing her for the first time in weeks. In the torch-lit volcanic caves of Adlivun. Aazuria’s silvery-white hair glistened as it hung down her back, woven with dozens of strands of pearls. Her stern eyes bored right through him, their color having returned to their natural, undersea azure; her namesake.

She was nothing like the fretful, lackluster girl he had seen when she came to answer Trevain’s door. His faith in her was restored. She was the same knowledgeable, refined woman as before; and she was more than capable of leading their nation. Here at home, Aazuria was fierce, judicious, and capable of anything. The difference was palpable even to Corallyn and the twins, who felt great comfort and security in seeing Aazuria’s coloring return to the pale, albino-like tones that they had known her to have for hundreds of years. With it, her fortitude seemed to return.

On land, they were all a little awkward and uncertain. Even the regal, confident Aazuria seemed overly-cautious and agitated above the surface.

“I will leave immediately, Princess Aazuria,” said Naclana, saluting across his chest with sincerity.

“I wish you a safe journey,” Aazuria said, inclining her head slightly in gratitude. Above the surface, her cousin was able to give her orders, but in their true niche, he was a messenger bound to serve her.

Fathoms of Forgiveness
by Nadia Scrieva

BLURB:

There is no divorce in the undersea kingdom of Adlivun. Marriage is a bond that lasts until death—even if death comes in several centuries, and in that time your spouse happens to become your sworn enemy. This is the conflict that General Visola Ramaris faces when she learns that the mighty Vachlan is behind the attacks on her kingdom. She has sworn to protect Adlivun with her life, but long ago, she also swore to love and honor her husband...

Visola must choose whether she will destroy Vachlan once and for all, or attempt the hardest thing conceivable: communication. After two hundred years of desertion, she has no faith in their feeble bond and knows she can never forgive him. When he threatens the person dearest to her, she must take action. Confronting Vachlan on enemy territory would be nothing short of suicide. She knows that if she falls into his custody, the deranged man would relish breaking her down and making her lose her sanity.

Princess Aazuria forbids Visola from taking matters into her own hands; she will do anything it takes to protect her friend from the man who wants to crush her. Alas, Visola is a crazy, uncontrollable warrior woman with the blood of Vikings in her veins. Why would she ever consider doing the safe and predictable thing?

Excerpt

Meeting the scrutiny of his steel-grey eyes made her feel sweltering hot and bitterly cold at the same time. It was a thousandfold more difficult to tolerate the intensity of his gaze when it was penetrating her skull from the front instead of the rear. She felt like her eyes did not offer as much protection as the dense bones of her skull had. He was already piercing beyond her eyeballs to knead her memories with his knuckles, and to dissect her thoughts with his fingernails. She tried to get past the pain in her skull to objectively observe her enemy. His jet-black hair was pulled back into its classic ponytail at the nape of his neck. Had he not changed his hairstyle in all this time? Had he not grown hideous with all the horrible deeds he had done?

It did not seem possible, but he looked exactly the same. Except for his eyes; those vicious grey-blue eyes would have terrified any lesser woman to tears. Visola could not help seeing the blatant resemblance to her daughter in his face. Although Alcyone’s coloring was closer to Visola’s own, there was still so much of Vachlan in her. Seeing this; seeing the glimpses of Alcyone in this man who was little more than a stranger, drew her spirit to him involuntarily. Visola realized that she had to face the terrible truth.

She was not strong enough to face the father of her child.

Destiny's Fall Blog Tour, and Giveaway with Marie Blodeau

It's my pleasure to welcome Marie Bilodeau to my Blog today, as part of her virtual Blog Tour for her novel, 'Destiny's Fall'. (Details of her contest are at the end of this post, but read what she has to say first, it's fascinating.)

I asked Marie how she goes about her research and world building. Here's what she has to say:

I tend to get obsessed with one topic and research it madly for fun. With Destiny’s Blood, the first book in the Destiny series, nebulae played an important role, or at least to my mind they did. A nebula even surrounded the homeworld of my heroine, Layela Delamores.  She was about to dive into it (while aboard her ship), and I was curious as to what nebulae were, what they were composed of, how they were created… I found the questions fascinating, and read many, many books on astronomy. I raided my library and local bookstores.  I went to online forums and Googled lots of images.  I became a walking encyclopedia of nebulae!

And then I found out that the story didn’t actually need a world-eating nebula (who knew?)  The story benefitted from a nebula-like shield structure, but suddenly my entire research seemed a little exuberant, at best.  And now I’ve probably forgotten most of the little factoids I’d hoarded so lovingly for months.

By front loading my research, meaning by doing my research before I finish my book (usually while I write it), I run the risk of changing directions during the course of the novel and not being able to even use my discovered tidbits of coolness. I don’t mind at all.  To force the story into a certain direction to justify the research instead of to amplify the story is downright criminal.

The research is never wasted. It expands my immediately accessibly brain database of cool stuff, and it provides unsuspecting facts for future stories.  For example, during my nebulae foray, I also read a lot about how stars are born, and how they die. That incidental research gave me founding ideas for the worlds and plotlines of the second and third books of the series.

Research can be inspirational, and you can discover your world through it.

Thanks Marie - and I certainly agree with what you say about research being inspirational!

BLURB:

A broken tradition. A hunted child. A rebellion that threatens to topple the very fabric of the universe.

When Layela Delamores gives birth to her first child, the ether immediately rejects what should be its only heir. A wave of destruction sweeps the ether races and sparks Solaria’s ire and rebellion on Mirial. A new heir rises to take the throne of Mirial, one who wields tainted ether.

Unable to access the flow of ether, Layela is left with little choice but to flee Mirial, seeking answers that may no longer exist, prepared to sacrifice everything to free herself and her daughter from the clutches of the First Star.

Excerpt

Elsa sent soothing waves to the earth. The saplings, still so small and tiny, responded in turn. Be still, she comforted them. They grew still and quiet, and she hoped they would avoid detection.

She reached out to the plants surrounding the gardens—the elm tree to the right, the great oak to the left. The bluebells lining the ground, mixed in with buttercups. The Lacile flowers which glowed gently, hiding now from the sun. The grass all around them, the wildflowers peeking through between the blades, the roses and their thorns, the poofy orange plants whose names she could never recall, and the bushes that held tiny leaves and pink flowers when spring was fresh and new.

She called out to all of them in the sunlight, to take care of the gardens, to protect the sproutlings of the Berganda in these uncertain times, while their mothers fought for peace on Mirial. Wave after wave of hope and need left her and filled the plants. With her all-too-human eyes, she imagined the plants standing a bit taller, but she knew it was only her imagination; they gently swayed in the wind around her.

Her own mother had been able to communicate with the plants and bend their will to hers. Or seal them to her with friendship, she wasn’t certain. Her own mother would have stood by Layela and fought, even giving up her life for her and the Berganda. Elsa hid her forming plans deep in her heart.

She had never known her mother, but she intended to live up to her legacy.
