"I’ve loved the stars ever since I was a child. All I ever wanted was to travel to distant planets, visit new worlds.” She smiled a little sadly. “Like you, I thought my work and my love of travelling was enough. But space can be very lonely sometimes, however beautiful it is. I hadn’t realised how lonely.”
“How long have you been a pilot, Jess?”“Seven years, allowing for the vagaries of Time-Dilation and FTL travel. I graduated at eighteen from the Orion Space Training Centre and then, after my two years practical space flight experience, joined the Sisterhood as a Missionary. Apart from a year’s intensive training with them I’ve been travelling in space since I qualified.”
“You went to Orion?”She nodded, enjoying the quick look of approval he gave her. Orion was notorious for the difficulty of its entry requirements and the rigorous training undertaken by its student pilots.“Seven years is a long time,” he said softly. “I promise you Jess, while we both live, you will never be alone again.”
